Hi all,

I’m after a little advice. Currently I have to administer my insulin last thing at night. The problem I’m having is that I’m now on 30 units and I’m finding it a lot last thing at night.

Therefore, how do you spilt the dose? Obviously, I’m aware it would be 15 units morning, then evening.
Would there need to be a specific time frame left in between?

Levemir is the insulin I’m taking.

Thanks all, comments all appreciated x

Wish I only had to take 30 units Nadia 🙂 I have to take 200 units a day and try and make it 12 hours apart, 100 units about 9am and 100 units at 9pm, but not worried about an hour either way.

John

I would discuss this with your diabetes team. That said, if you take Levemir last thing at night, remember it doesn’t last 24 hours - it’s more like 18. It’s better taken as a split dose, with the larger dose in the morning. I’m T1, but I take twice as much in the morning as I do in the evening, because most meals are then covered by the larger dose, and the lower dose in the evening when you aren’t eating. 9.00am and 9pm are the times I use, like John.

I think the best option is to discuss this with your specialist nurse. These things can be so individual – what works for one won’t work for another.

Have you ever set alarms to check BG overnight every couple of hours?

That might help you see if 30u last thing is working well for you?

After testing and adjusting I have found that splitting 4 units @ 19:00 and 5 units at 07:00 works best for me. That might not always be the case. The important thing is to find what works for you.

Many split their dose but I don't. I just modify my Bolus ratio at the end of the '18 hours' to compensate for the Basal running out. This saves one injection and avoids needing to work out the split. My DN said not to split (not sure why) but it makes sense to me anyway.

It’s whatever floats your boat, Dave. If that works for you, then fine. Everyone is different.🙂

I have always given my insulin before meal. Now on a pump with split dose 😉

When I was on Levemir I split my dose morning and night. It gave me the chance to adjust daytime to account for increased activity levels without mucking up night time doses. The split is very dependent on your individual needs so good to talk to your ur HCP about it.
