Split bolus

Had my usual talk in with my DN today, carb counting etc, split dosing insulin came up where she said some people take part of the insulin 20mins before eating and the rest up to 2hrs later depending what there eating pizza, curry and nan breads etc, how do people work out that a split dose would be better than taking the insulin all at once, is it trial and error. Once again Thanks.

Trial and error @Charl but also if you have a meal, eg a high fat pizza, dip low afterwards but then shoot up high sometime later, that would suggest you might want to try splitting your bolus for that meal.

This is definitely a thing I’ve had decent success with @Charl - it’s not foolproof, but I no longer fear/avoid those meals.

There is a bit of trial and error needed (but then, takeaways… so woo!!). If you’ve not worked out your system yet, you just need a few more goes. 😉

Initially what I noticed that there were several ‘risky’ meals (often a combination of both high fat AND high carbs) where if I injected the whole amount ‘up front’ I would end up going hypo fairly soon after the meal, and then rise and rise and rise several hours later.

So for me the ‘split dose’ was initially about spreading the insulin action over a longer period.

But after some experimentation I worked out that I needed to allow a slightly ‘stronger’ ratio for larger meals too. That there was a need for some additional insulin.

Good luck with your experiments and working out what splits and doses generally work for you.
