Spikes

I'd like to understand what constitutes a spike please. I only test bg in the morning before breakfast and go between 6.4 and 7.5. Tonight I had chicken kiev, spinach, brussels, very small piece of roasted sweet potato and very small amount of mash. Tested 2 hours later and was 8.9. I won't eat again until the morning so I'm thinking it's ok? Type 2 and take metformin. Been doing well for the last few weeks and losing weight too.

Probably a little higher than you really want, the rule of thumb is no more than 8-8.5 after 2 hours but looking for the difference from before you ate to the post meal 2hr would tell you if your meal was too high carb if the increase was more than 2-3mmol/l.
You may have been OK with either the mash or the sweet potato if the Kiev was also bread crumbed.

Thanks for that. Ye my reason for doing it was to see how I react to certain things. Breadcrumbs is not an everyday thing. If I have it again I will do before and after to see what happens. Thanks for the 'rule of thumb' that's the kind of info I was looking for

I've always seen people say it shouldn't increase by more than 2 at 2 hours after the first bite.

The guidance seems to be no more than 8-8.5mmol/l 2 hours post meal but when people are first diagnosed they may be higher than than pre meal so in order to give a way of them finding out which meals are tolerated then by looking at an increase of no more than 2-3mmol/l will be a more realistic way of seeing if a meal is Ok. Once levels come down then they may want to become more strict.
But making changes which hopefully will reduce blood glucose is better done gradually to minimise issues with eyes and nerves which can happen to some people with a rapid drop in blood glucose.

Thanks, I was diagnosed 2021 and did really well without really understanding what I was doing. I think I treated it more like a weight loss diet, if that makes sense. Then seemed to lose my way. This time I'm making more of an effort to understand ( bit by bit). Next time I have something i think is a treat I will test before and and after, thanks again

Thanks, I'm beginning to understand things a bit more
