Spare Pump Tubing

As a result of having to replace ripped out cannulas, I've managed to build up an excess of the tubing part of the infusion set.

I'm assuming this happens to everyone and wondered what to do with the spares? I can't see the number I have getting any smaller and it seems a shame just to throw them away.

Any ideas?

Whenever I’ve had a site fail or get pulled out before it’s 3 day life I’ve just either used the new tubing and completely started again, or used the ‘in use’ tubing and disposed of the unneeded one.

The Medtronic sets I use have everything packed up in the same sterile container, so once you’ve pulled off the paper lid the tubing doesn’t seem keeping.

I once tried to snap a Medtronic used tube & am not that weak (but I could not) 😉

For the pump I have (Accu Chek Combo) I have in infusion set cannulas, as well as complete infusion sets. If I end up with a skanky cannula or pull one out I am able to just open up a new cannula. Do they do the same for your pump?

I always seem to manage to pull out the cannula shortly after fitting a new one, usually when I move the cannula from one side to the other so there is little point in replacing everything. Also, with all my surgical scarring I don't have much room for rotating sites so if I can just replace the tubing then I do.

I did get use from one when my son ran a marathon to tie his timer to his trainer but he doesn't run that many so it's not a long term solution.

So you don't yank out the cannula put a bit of tape over the tubing near the connection. It saves the NHS £10 per cannula 🙂
