The South Wales Programme was established in January 2012 to oversee restructuring plans for five Health Boards across the region.

Officials responsible for steering a radical reorganisation of health services in South Wales have defended plans to have consultants on hospital sites for no more than 16 hours a day ? insisting the Welsh NHS was already ?nowhere near? that benchmark.

Representatives of the South Wales Programme, which was established in January 2012 to oversee restructuring plans for five Health Boards across the region, also defended a delay in responding to a consultation on the plans.

A two-month consultation on the future of consultant-led maternity and neonatal care, inpatient children?s services and emergency medicine (A&E) prompted nearly 60,000 responses, and led to a delay in the decision in what option will be chosen until at least the end of the year.
