South Shields Town Hall will be turning blue for World Diabetes Day next week.
The event has been organised by the South Tyneside Diabetes UK group and the town librarian to raise awareness of diabetes in the town, as well as highlighting the complications the condition can cause.
It will take place on Friday, November 14.
There are 9,900 people with diabetes in South Tyneside and an estimated 1,200 yet to be diagnosed who have the condition but don’t yet know it. Diabetes complications can cause heart attacks, blindness, amputation and stroke.
The condition costs the NHS around £10bn a year and most of that cost is dealing with complications.
