Some staff working in county council care homes could see their wages drop by as much as 12% after the takeover by Care UK, their union has claimed.

That prompted an exodus of experienced carers – and has led to a staff shortage which has helped contribute to the problems at the company’s new homes in the county, it has been claimed.

So far Care UK has opened three new care homes in Suffolk but two - Mildenhall Lodge in Mildenhall and Asterbury Place in Ipswich - are not being sent any more county council residents because of fears about standards of care.

Yesterday the county confirmed it would not be sending any more residents to new Care UK homes until it was sure that the problems had been eliminated.
