A completely non-invasive and needle-free blood sugar sensor known as Sokru is set to be tested in its first clinical trials with people who have type 1 diabetes. The Sokru glucose monitor uses a patented technology to identify the blood glucose level that was apparently inspired by the ultra-sensitive noses of hypo-alert dogs.

It's all come a long way since this savagery! 😱 🙂

I remember ‘the guillotine’ 😱 I winced just looking at that picture. It was an evil thing!

Looking at the link and the website of the company behind the device I see:

1. It claims to be a device which will detect sudden drops in blood glucose level - nowhere does it claim that it can actually measure blood glucose.

2. There is an assertion that sudden blood glucose drops cause the release of chemicals which are exuded through the skin. No suggestion of what these chemicals are.

3. There are claims that they can detect these chemicals by some patented method although there is nothing about the principles involved.

As such it looks like technical hype but what is of interest is the idea. It is oft reported that dogs can be trained to detect illnesses and changes in health in humans. Presumably they do it with their highly tuned sense of smell and finding a way of replicating that using something other than a dogs nose is an interesting idea. They may have something but you have to wonder how far it has got. Can't help thinking that there may be more mileage in developing a talking dog to can tell you when it smells something odd.

Another one of those "watch this space but don't hold your breath" things I fear.

This is my default reaction to all the “latest non invasive sensor breakthrough” stories. I’m hoping I’ll be pleasantly surprised one of these decades.
