Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello,
Recently (4 hours ago) got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. My first reaction was to cry and then I was scared. My GP told me to cut out all carbs and sugar immediately. My family told me it was my fault for being overweight. So not feeling too good!
I guess I just wanted some suggestions for a no carb/no sugar diet for someone that loves their food!

That's a daft poll - they are both OK as they are both sweetened with artificial sweeteners - if you MUST drink the orrible stuff at all ! (something I have never ever personally liked the taste of, Coke - even before I was diabetic) Of course if you don't stop eating and drinking mega sweet things - how will you ever re-educate your taste buds to accept less sweet food and drink?

I prefer 'fruit' flavoured things and one of my favourites is Tesco's own brand fruit flavoured sparking water. Comes in half litre bottles, usually on offer 3 or 4 bottles for about £1.50.

And tea - which I didn't like at all without sugar to begin with - but miraculously after a day and a half - I actually realised it's FAR more thirst quenching without sugar at all. That was really weird - so you need to try these things for yourself and see how you get on - you'll most likely be quite surprised what you find you really enjoy, when push comes to shove.

All protein is fine, as are fats in moderation. It's just carbs we can't handle too well - and if you cut down on them (as well as taking regular exercise) you'll probably find the weight will start to fall off you.
 
By the way - how were you diagnosed, what actual tests have they done to establish you are Type 2? Cos I was 22 when I was diagnosed with T1 - you don't need to be a child for it to be that!

Well, that's ignorant..... They should be supporting you..... BTW there is a string suggestion of genetic predisposition, especially if D runs in the family...

Sorry you have had to join a club that no one wants and it's okay to be scared but you can deal with this. If you have a lot of weight to lose you might find that just reducing portion size and losing weight will control your diabetes. I had already lost 2 stone and was just under 13 stone when I was diagnosed and my blood sugar was sky high. I drastically reduced my carbs by no rice, potatoes, pasta, bread or carb heavy veg like swede, parsnips plus of course sweet things have gone so no chocolate, desserts. I'm on medication (metformin twice a day) and test myself regularly. My blood sugar is now in the normal range and it's taken me less than since 19th Nov to do this so you can improve quickly. My weight loss is not great, only 1/2 stone in the same period but as I've upped my exercise I have probably gained some muscle weight.

Your family need to support you and the changes you make can help them all. My husband still eats carbs if dining out etc. but else he's on the low carb diet with me as we eat together every evening. He hasn't lost much weight but his beer belly has gone. So while his weight has stayed the same he's lost inches off his stomach.

I saw nurse yesterday in GP practice about something else and when she was prescribing anti biotics I said I was recently diagnosed and on meds (to check no interaction) and she said to me "is it in your family" and I said no and she said "oh you were just unlucky then". She didn't blame me!

Hi Katielou. At least your GP didn't tell you to eat carbs like mine did! Instead, I came here, got some sound advice and proper support. I didn't tell any of my family (except my husband) about my diagnosis for quite some time as I knew they would be judgmental despite the strong genetic link (my dad, grandmother and aunt were all Type 1 diabetics). I too cried at first. I fully understand your reaction. But... you have come to exactly the right place for advice, support, guidance and a sense of belonging without judgement! Welcome.x
