Had my appointment this morning :( The GP took a look at the figures, and she said "yes, you definately diabetic". Oh joy. I tested this morning before i left home, and i was 14.9..
I fasted since last night, so I was able to have a Fasting blood test there and then. She said once the results are back she will start me on Metformin.
I really don't want to go on Metformin...I am really bad when it comes to upset stomachs and needing to run to the loo every 5 minutes.

I haven't got a clue what i am meant to do now, i guess i have to wait for the blood test results to come back, and then take it from there.
Does anyone know if it is normal to test hormone levels at the same time.

Thanks for reading...I have a feeling i will be here quite a lot xx

Hi Doddy, sorry to hear about the confirmation of your diagnosis, but with a bit of work you will soon begin to see benefits I am sure. As is often said, it is a marathon not a sprint, so don't feel you need to know everything at once and think of each test as an extra bit of useful information rather than worrying too much about what the numbers are.

Did you get the Gretchen Becker book? It's a very good introduction, and also Maggie Davey's letter.

Remember also that if you don't get on with the ordinary metformin then there is the slow-release version (Glucophage SR), and remember you may be able to come off it eventually.

For now, try to limit the carbs in your meals, and try to choose lower GI/GL where possible - seeded bread, new potatoes, brown or basmati rice, wholewheat pasta. You'll get there, and we're right behind you! 🙂

p.s. not sure about the hormone tests, hopefully someone else will know.

The basic bloods taken are for HbA1c's and the electrolytes of the blood, such as potassium, calcium levels etc... And check liver/kidney function etc

Some but not all (mine do) also check thyroid function...

Our hormones do have an impact on our blood glucose, so looking at hormone levels, could help to indicate what impacting on your blood glucose, helps towards finding best treatment...

Not everybody get's the upset stomach on metformin, but if you do get problems you can always ask for the slow release form, which is much kinder..

Sorry to hear you've joined our club - but the members on here are really nice !

Dealing only with your point about Metformin - I've got IBS so anything upsets my tummy. Metformin Slow Release doesn't upset me but the standard one did. If that's any reassurance to you I hope it helps. 🙂

You meet a very nice class of people when you are one of us! - so welcome to the club no-one wanted to join.

Which hormones were you thinking you'd like tested and did your doc make any comment about it? - they aren't sposed to test you for stuff they haven't told you about. (If you were scraped up off the road and taken to A&E they would obviously - but not in a non-life and death situation)

Hi Doddy, I've been taking Metformin for a couple of years now and I've had some 'fun' with it (for want of a better word). Thing is it's really not too bad once you get used to it.

I've found it's a lot better when taken with a substantial but non-dairy based meal. So I wouldn't take it with cheese and crackers for example, better with a big plate of greens. The adverse side-effects for me were basically loose bowel movements but they never made me actually feel ill.

I soon went on the SR version after I mentioned this to the doctor and now I have virtually no side effects at all, apart from much lower blood glucose levels.

Sadly, one of my favourite foods is cheese, which I can still eat but not as much as I'd like.

Everyone has been lovely...so thankyou.

there is a lot ot sort out, and I guess none of it will be sorted till I see the GP again...
I hit my highest level last night...20.1

Over the last 3 weeks, my levels seem to be rising...is this an indication that things are getting worse before I even have the chance to see the doc about it all...or is it a natural progession and to be expected?
I feel dreadful when I get to 19/20, and just want to sleep.

Can I ask the dr for the modified release metformin at my appointment..she won't think i am being a pain before we have even begun! That's if she wants to put me on it of course!

Sorry i am all question at the moment, and not a lot of support...I guess in time, I will learn enough to be able to offer support!

The GP didn't tell me she was checking hormones...it was only when I saw the vampire, she told me they were testing my hormones too
