So as the title suggests i have a question about snacks between meals that may be slightly more carby. Some days having the usual snack can be really boring and a packet of crisps can be seriously tempting.

When these occasions occur what do you do? Do you do a small injection for the snack according to the carbs in it or do you do a correction dosage with your next meal? always been abit confused by this.

Some people find that they can manage a snack of around 10g without extra insulin, but I'm not one of them. I usually only have carby snacks if I think I am likely to go low before my next meal, which usually means that I've made a mistake in my insulin calculation for the previous meal (if you see what I mean!). If I do feel peckish then I have a few dry roasted peanuts 🙂

For the most part anything over 5g and I'd probably have to dose for it. Having said that... there are days (after extra exercise/activity or whatever) when I can grab a biscuit without needing any extra insulin 🙄

Personally if I needed extra insulin I wouldn't leave it till the next meal as by then my levels would be higher than I'd like before the meal and harder to keep in check post-meal (if that makes sense!), so the knock-on effects would drift on much longer.

I usually have to take it on a 'how are things working this week' basis and tend to avoid carby snacks as a rule as all the second guessing/variations kind of take the shine off :D

As the others have said - it depends on your ratio but most people would need to inject if they had something like a bag of crisps.

If your ratio for that time of day was low (1unit for 15 carbs or less) you might get away with it but otherwise inject when you eat it (as if it were another meal)

The only time we don't do this is if K has a bedtime snack of (say) milk and a cookie, but she does this to keep levels a bit higher overnight. She could probably manage without now, but it's a Pre Diabetes routine she likes to stick to - assume an adult wanting to have a 'bedtime snack' would inject for it. That would be your call depending on your routine and what usually happens to your levels during the night, I suppose🙂

On novorapid I would find it hard to allow for a carby snack in-between meals without avoiding a postprandial hypo, this is why I don't snack unless bloods are running low or more active than anticipated.

If the snack is within 1 hour of the next meal I would just add on the carb value to the next meals tally...........otherwise I would dose for it.........

Fortunately my meter can tell me what insulin is still working and offer me a revised dose when considering my current BG level..........sometimes I have tested and found I don't need any insulin for a snack, most commonly on weekends when the previous nights alcohol is still being processed........😱
