Hello folk, hope all tickety booo.

I've been alright but often go into double figures when I snack a bit, I decide there no point injecting as I have some insulin in me still, but I then snack a bit more than I first thought, nothing too unhealthy just maybe a few more biscuits fruit possibly nuts etc etc, my thinking behind it is 1 unit in me doesn't generally do much but 2 would mean I would have to snack more than I first thought and I don't want to eat more because I have injected 2 units, so current situation I am at 6.5 (corrected by 2 less than 2 hrs ago) I have an orange on my desk, do I inject 1 and hope it does something inject 2 and possible go a bit low or do nothing and eat it or go through the green door and turn to page 546???

Just trying to fine tune things, hence trying to snack less and just eat at meals any thoughts would be gratefullt received.

Thanks

Rossi 🙂

I've always struggled with snacking and the constant BG grief kinda took the joy out of it.

As a result I try only to snack if I can see some kind of over-estimation of insulin is pulling my lower and might have *a* biscuit.

Other than that if peckish and BGs are level/in range/bit high I'll grab a handful of nuts or a chunk of cheese.

No help really, but just to let you know it's not just you that find it impossible!

Mike and I could be twins as far as dealing with the snacking scenario goes - I'm almost exactly the same! I just don't snack on anything carby these days unless I'm doing something active like gardening or a long run. If I do feel peckish I turn (to the) nuts 🙂

I find snacking difficult sometimes if there is biscuits and cakes at work!! 😱 i think ooo one wont do me any harm until lunch and them im up in double figures with only myself to blame!

I am good most of the time, i can get away with a small apple/pear/satsuma/ONE biscuit without any insulin and no BG effects. I do sometimes have nuts and cheese if i fancy them, the time i find is hardest to control is late night snacking...im working on that 🙄

Definitely one bonus of the pump (except for my waistline!) is that I can bolus with confidence every time I have a snack, I did struggle with snacking on MDI 🙂

It would be extremely difficult for me to snack on biscuits or fruit between meals without having to inject insulin, the only exception is when I am physically active, even low carb snacks have a tendency to raise my bg so I avoid snacking altogether. I try and eat foods at meal times that sustain me until the next meal, often snacking is a habit which is hard to break and isn't necessarily because we are hungry.

Obviously if you could reduce snacking on carbs that would be good, but if not, you could try and get yourself the Freestyle InsulinX meter..........

It has your insulin/carb ratios programmed in as well as your 'active insulin', so you just test your blood, input the carbs, and it gives you a dose taking into account your ratio at that time and active insulin, its not perfect but works OK.

....same as the accu-chek expert meter 🙂

Just off to google both of those meters and see if I can get my paws on either :D- do either of them also test for ketones?

No the accu chek aviva expert doesn't test for ketones, great meter though and the accu chek aviva combo is the same meter but blue tooths to the pump....really cool! 🙂

Hi Rossi,

I've been having real problems with my snacking. If I'm having something I tend to inject, but then I've found I must be having insulin overlaps and end up hypoing.

Though to be honest, my readings have been so totally random recently that even my diabetes team can't figure them out!!! But that's a whole 'nother story!! :D

wishing you lots of luck!

The insulinX unfortunately doesn't test for ketones either.............:(............but for me personally, the accuracy of the urine test strips are sufficient if I was ill for example, would be good though.............

hmm blimey yeah I think the thing to do is to try and get back to non snacking ways unless I'm on my toes all day, and that way I can try and see if these ratios I have in my head are actually any use! I'm thinking when I see quack next month I may see if he mentions seeing a dietician as last time I told him not to bother, and maybe see if he mentions that porkpie, I mean desmond course!!

Cheers, and blimey t'isn't good to chin wag!

Thanks

Rossi
