its probably a silly question and have asked before, but is smoking even more harmful if you are diabetic??

Hi, at a guess I would suggest it would greatly increase your risk of heart and blood vessel diseases since both can contribute to these problems alone.

Its not me, its being around my mums smoking, she doesnt seem to care. Am finding it hard to deal with as it is :(

Shes selfish in my opinion. She'll say its her house, if i don't like it i know what i can do. I live at home at the moment and i hate her smoking with a passion. I've read that piece on the website. I darent say anything to her. Shes smoking by me now and I'm breathing it in :(

Hi the short answer is YES. I gave up in January 2010 after smoking for many, many years. It's one of the best things I have done. As we know it's so unhealthy and with Diabetes it can cause problems with the eyes, heart, nerve endings etc. It also contributed to my declining teeth, gums and bone structure and I now go to Guys Hospital for treatment;(, smoking restricts the amount of oxygen you take in. If you want to give up, then there are lots of
help you can get. It's very hard to start with, but you do get there in the end :D Best wishes Sheena

Just wondering if your mum is willing to come to some compromise ? Yes it is her home, but you are her daughter and fundamentally your health is paramount. Could you suggest that she smokes only in a particular room of the house? Or at least forwarn you that she is going to light up so you can choose whether to leave the room. It sounds like you find it hard to talk to her with her "it's my home, like it or leave" approach. Try to be open and honest with her why you need to make these changes, your not being "awkward", you just can't be passively smoking against your wishes. Good luck 🙂

A passive smoker smokes 25% of all the fags the someone else smokes over em .... so eg if mum smokes 20 a day, then you actually smoke 5 a day.

And I thought we were supposed to have 5 a day :D

Sorry couldnt resist! On a serious note, I cant believe your mum is being so selfish - even when I did smoke, once the kids were born, I never smoked in the house or in their vicinity.

Actually, I've just noticed your original post in the newbies section where you say that you were happy you're mum found this website for you - so perhaps she's not as selfish as I first thought?

I am happy she found this website, but her smoking round me is driving me mad. She doesnt seem to care.

It's a tricky situation since you're in her house, even though it would obviously be better for her not to smoke at all.

Could you limit the amount of time you spend in the same room, which seems a bit extreme but clearly she's not really going to compromise on this issue. 🙂
