The possibility that smoking during pregnancy may reduce the risk of type 1 diabetes in offspring has been suggested by an Australian study, but the authors say caution is needed when interpreting the findings.
Babies born to mothers who smoked were less likely to develop type 1 diabetes than those born to mothers who did not smoke, even after adjusting for confounders, the study of children born in WA between 1998 to 2008 found.
But the numbers were small, with 0.10% of babies born to mothers who smoked going on to develop type 1 diabetes compared to 0.13% of babies of mothers who did not smoke during their pregnancy.
