I recenetley started a course of champix to help me quit my 25 a day habit i have had. I have not had a cigarette since sunday eve now.

What a diffrence i have seen in my testing book, in the last 2 days, the best i have had since being diagonsed, and no hypo for the last 3 days

Yesterdays were before breakfast- 6.1

2 hours after beakfast- 5.7

Before eve meal 5.9

Before bed 6.0

What a result from not smoking, i would urge any one that is a smoker to try and give them up.......🙂:D🙂

Wow! What a result! You must be very proud, and what a great incentive too.

Well done!

Immediate results are fantastic. Do keep us posted on how you are getting on. With those results I'm sure you will do well and keep up the good work.

We are here if you need support.

Scotty I don't want to put a dampner on your results but:

When a person ingests nicotine, the body responds by briefly raising the levels of glucose in the blood. So when you give up smoking that efect is reversed leading to lower blood sugar readings. Unfortunately this will only continue for a short time after quitting while the body readjusts to being nicotin free. You may notice your blood sugar levels begin to rise again within about a week of quitting smoking.

WOW well done scotty thats brilliant numbers x

Well done Scotty......i've got the task of giving up ahead of me and i'm not looking forward to it. Any tips greatly appreciated.

Well done on giving up - it will make such a difference to your life.

I gave up 6 years ago!!

There is that, but also, by not smoking, this improves the insulin receptors in the cells making you more sensitive to insulin, so the beneficial effects will be longer-term. Stopping smoking helps in so many other ways too, which I'm sure we're all aware of, but especially when you have diabetes.

Well done Scotty! It's good that the dip in levels is giving you some instant and extra incentive to stick at it!🙂

I was going to go on Champix but chickened out.

What are you going to spend the money you're saving on?

I've been smoke free for about 5 or 6 months now.

First of all ask your gp, to refare you, to a smoking nurse for support.
Discuss with them what would best for you to give up, theres so much now, patches, gum, zyban, champix etc.

Write down all the positives about not smoking, also write down how much you spend on cigs a week then add up a year you will be shocked.

When u give up buy yourself something nice as a reward, and also to get as much support from your freinds and family,

Good luck choccy

I am a non smoker, but appreciate it is quite difficult to give up smoking. Would any smokers like the support of a giving up smoking thread? If enough people want it, can it be arranged Admin?

Admin will get tired out at this rate she only just made many changes last week lol.

Champix I feel caused my diabetes as two weeks after I started the course of tablets I started getting the symptoms of diabetes.

The last time I consulted the BNF which is the book you use to see drug interactions and side effects in medicine it did state it could cause loss of glycemic control and diabetes

What ? it interferes with people's autoimmune systems? I've not heard that before.

Gosh - I thought it was simply like statins which can cause T2.

All I can say for certain is that I got type 1 diabetes after 2 to 3 weeks of starting champix. when I first looked at the adverse effects it stated it can cause a loss of glycemic control.

But now in the latest issue of the BNF it now states it can cause diabetes

Drugs are so complicated and sophisticated now. they are rushed through testing and adverse trial data can be suppressed so it never sees the light of day. The only data that is published puts modern drugs in a positive light.

Don't get me wrong allot of positive drugs come onto the market, that are literally life saving. But some modern drug only show up their adverse effects when they have been on the market for some time.

Looking at drugs.com, that suggests a rare side effect of this drug (less than 0.1% chance) is acute pancreatitis.

There is quite a plethora of other more common side effects which don't sound too pleasant! Still, one has to balance the undoubted benefits of stopping smoking against them.

But, personally, I am very pleased that I was able to stop a fifteen year, twenty a day habit by going cold turkey! I stopped when I moved from Sheffield to London so was able to easily break the habit.

Andy 🙂

I was a "cold turkey" person almost 40 years ago-my how time flies. I don't think its easy to quit for anyone whatever the methods they use, and wish good luck and congratulstions to everyone who tries and succeedes even if its for a short time
