Relationship to Diabetes

Hi. ive recently been cutting down the amount I smoke in attempt to eventually stop. Ive gone from approx 10 to 3. Now I dont know whether this is a coincidence but I have also started to find my blood sugars are lower than usual. has anyone experienced this or know if smoking highers blood sugar? Hence the drop in mine?

It's true! Smoking can increase blood sugar levels because of the carbon monoxide that gets into the bloodstream and making you more insulin resistant.

Plus, a lot of the harmful effects of smoking are made worse if you have diabetes, since both can contribute to cardio-cascular disease.

Well done! Take that final step soon - cutting down will just keep you addicted, you need to be free of nicotene for 3-4 weeks to break the addiction - it's worth it! 🙂

I would also advise to just stop, cutting down is just a pretend expression........

Get some patches/gum and just stop.........good luck....🙂

Ahhhh well this now makes sense then! Yeah Ive tried the cold turkey route and believe me it wasnt pretty. I snapped after 2 days. Just from cutting down to 3 is making me feel anxious and nausea. I havent replaced the ones Ive cut out with nicotine replacement so am very suprised Im doing this well. Once 3 becomes the norm then I will go to 2 and so on......... and then plunge! STAY CLEAR! lol

Am glad that by doing this it will help with my blood sugar control as this again gives me more incentive as would like to start a family🙂

Good for you!

Although FWIW I didn't notice the slightest difference to the amount of insulin I needed when I packed it up, nor when I started again (- My Bad.)

Best Decision I made to give up.

Set a date and work toward it. Thats what I did.. The night before I bought myslef a pack of 20 and smoked myself sick. I didnt miss them after that what so eve and stuck to my date.

2 years this year, Id only every managed 3 months before.

I will never be a smoker again.

What I do know is it isnt very easy to give up! I think my body is stating to go into shock😱

Don't think of it as 'giving up' - it's 'stopping' 🙂 You're not having to give up something that is good for you, you are stopping harming yourself and wasting your money! Also, when the withdrawal pains get bad, just think of how that is the last throes of smoking's grip on you, then it will be gone for good! 🙂

That is just a state of mind I think. I didn't have any problems stopping. Mind you, I had also just moved from Sheffield to my new job in London so had also broken my habit of smoking. It simply didn't have a place in my life any more.

Without that break, maybe it may have been more difficult for me.

Anyway, it is now 13 years and counting since stopping.

Good luck!

Andy 🙂

Smoking can certainly be a state of mind. There are several techniques that can be used for giving up and some drugs that can help.
I gave up by
a) setting a date
b) telling everyone I was giving up
c) seeing my GP practice nurse to go on a course of Zyban
That was nine years ago this year, and was well worth it, although too late to stop the heart attack. Now I'm too scared to have a smoke - and don't believe what anyone says you will still crave a smoke now and then.

Good luck and do go and see your GP surgery, most have helpful programs these days.
