So it’s been a week since my diagnosis and I’ve really hit this head on under 1000 cal a day and under 50g of carbs ! Weight loss 6lbs . I’ve just had my first normal range sugar reading of 6.4 . Feeling like that’s a small win on my journey !

Many congratulations on your success. Setting small goals and achieving them is very motivating and it is really important to acknowledge your successes and be proud of them, so WELL DONE!

Fantastic on the weight loss already. Just be careful of reducing your carbs too quickly as in some people it can cause some eye issues as the environment in the eye can change, which alters its shape and changes the focal length so your vision can go blurry for a while until adjusts back to the normal salty from being sugary due to high glucose levels.

Unless you are doing a deliberately low calorie diet for a few weeks, I found restricting calories was not necessary for my weightloss. I know this is against all advice, but I never had any success with low calorie diets as I just slowed down to compensate - to the point of collapse on many occasion.
If you find your energy waning, eating normal amounts of calories but keeping to low carb worked for me - I did not even think about weightloss until my clothes started sliding south, eating no more than 50 gm of carb a day fixed the diabetes very quickly.

Advice needed ive suddenly developed throbbing pain in my hip / buttock area I’ve struggled to sleep tonight because of it . Could this be diabetes related ? I’ve read about nerve pain and if so what can I do ?

Pain in your buttock can be associated with sciatica. It may also travel down the leg and can sometimes be felt in the heel or back of the knee and will usually be caused by a pinched nerve in the back. Have you done any gardening recently or other bending activity that might have triggered it? Stretching exercises and Ibuprofen work for me but it does take time to settle down and I have occasionally resorted to an osteopath to square things up again when it has been really problematic.

It is unlikely to be diabetes related but do contact your GP for advice if you are concerned or it persists.

Nerve pain due to diabetes can develop over a long period as a long-term complication of elevated BG levels, and I think often develops on ‘both sides’ simultaneously.

But as @rebrascora says, there can be lots of other causes too, unrelated to diabetes, so best to get things checked by your GP if your discomfort continues.

There are also rarer cases where a rapid drop in average BG levels from consistently high to much lower/in-range numbers can aggravate nerve endings and/or fine blood vessels in the eyes and cause transient nerve pain or eye damage.
