I have had diabetes for about 11 years and i've been diet controlled, at the end of january 23 i went on metformin i'm now back of them and waiting for a revue from my diabetic nurse, what i am finding is that i'm waking up early in the morning hungry, can anybody recommend having something the night before to give me a good night sleep.

I assume you went onto metformin because your HbA1C had increased and tightening up on your diet wasn't working.
If you are feeling hungry then increasing protein and healthy fats in your meals may help.
Low carb snacks for night time munching could be full fat Greek yoghurt with a few berries, Nut protein bars like Nature Valley or shop own, less than 10g carb per bar or a few nuts or maybe a drink rather than food.
But it really depends on what your blood glucose is.

Yes my HbA1C did go up & my diabetes nurse asked me if I wanted to go on metformin, which I did,I'm going to try what you recommend, thanks for your help leadinglights

I have been finding a decaf coffee with cream at bedtime both comforting and sustaining and obviously lower carb than a hot chocolate. .

Other evening snacks are cheese with or without olives or a few roasted peanuts.... portion control is a big issue with nuts as it is very easy to keep eating until the bag is gone. 🙄

I love peanuts! (well… and any nuts really!) If I’m concerned about portion size I’ll put a handful in a ramekin dish so that I know when I’ve got to the end.

I particularly enjoy a mix of flavours - dry roasted… chilli dusted (not crunchy coated, yuk!)… salt and vinegar… salted… and if I’m feeling fancy some of those assorted shelled nuts.

A pinch of each has real variety and keeps me happily nibbling and savouring the salty flavours for ages!

Welcome to the forum @Mickey14 🙂

Is there any problem with feeling hungry when you wake up? It is normal to feel hungry at mealtimes, we aren’t supposed to feel full all the time. Could you just get up and have your breakfast, go for a walk and get started on the day?

That would work - except I can’t stop myself tossing handfuls into my mouth as I fill the ramekin/bowl with my carefully measured portion  There’s something about salted nuts that’s very addictive!

I think @Eddy Edson posted a thread about hyper addictive foods last night and the combination of fat and sodium was one of the 3 categories and I immediately thought of nuts.

Only if they're salted, I think.

Yes, the book 'Salt, Sugar, Fat: How the Food Giants hooked us' by Michael Moss is well worth reading.

There are a few videos about this

Or those big tubs of peanut butter than seem to be gone in a week...

Although I did recently catch my daughter scoffing some, so maybe it's not just me.

You are so right! Peanut butter is a major issue for me too and my partner has a nut allergy so I definitely can't blame him and no kids here to raid my stores, so I have to take full responsibility when the jar is empty! Our glass recycling bin only goes out once every few months and the number of peanut butter jars is really quite shocking!!

My wife recently commented that I seem to go through a tub a week AND two jars of Aldi almond butter!
On the plus side, it keeps me 'regular'.

Only if it's "salted dry roasted" I think .

I don't think that's a 'thing' in the UK?

But from the back of KP (the nuts nut's nut) packets I just accidentally happen to have in my snack drawer:

KP Dry Roasted - per 100g salt 2.0g
KP Original Salted - per 100g salt 1.3g

I often have a handful of Brazil nuts before bedtime. I'd been slowly making my way through a packet of mixed nuts instead of salted peanuts and I'd discovered that out of the mix I was really enjoying the Brazils the most, so now I just buy a bag of them instead. They're obviously unsalted and naturally taste sweet (to me, at least).

I love brazils! Well and most other nuts too tbh.
