Relationship to Diabetes

I have just been diagnosed yesterday with Steriod induced diabetes (for either Crohn's Disease or colitis) after checking about what I assumed was a urine infection during a holiday. Glucose in urine was very high. So shocked. I was sent for more blood tests. I ordered a home testing blood glucose monitor to check what was going on.
My lowest fasting level was 15.1 and during the day my levels were rising to over 30! This is with cutting sugar intake down to about 30g a day (basically from bread, vegetables & milk in tea).
Call from hospital to be seen same day. Scary. Nice people though.
I am now on insulin 4 times a day but my levels still went up to 27.6 today.

How high is too high? When do I need to get urgent help?

Hi @A82 . Welcome to our friendly forum, though I'm sad you've had to find us.

What insulin are you on

You must be feeling absolutely rotten with those high numbers. To be Honest especially as you're so new to diabetes and insulin , I think if your levels are in the 20s or above you should contact either your team or your GP out of hours service asap.
Did they explain about correct doses?
Do let us know how you are.

You need to start on low doses of insulin and gradually build up. Sudden reduction of blood glucose levels would make you feel hypoglycemic, as your body has got used to higher than normal levels.
If you're concerned, then phone the out of hours number of your diabetes team.

Hi, Thank you for your replies.
I did speak to my team and they increased my dose a little bit. I have another appointment on Monday so should know more then.
My numbers have improved a lot today (in the teens) so I am feeling more normal and less concerned.
I had been told to take a week off work while my levels and body get balanced again so just trying to rest and let my body recover from being hyper for too long.
Hope everyone else is doing well. 🙂

Thank you for your response. I am feeling a lot better today and feel like things will get better. 🙂
I am on Novo Rapid (6) before each meal and then Lantus (was 8 now 10) overnight.

Thank you for your response. My name starts with A and I was born in 1982.
My levels have come down a lot today so feeling better and less concerned. I am hoping this will be a short term problem while I finish the steroids. I will just have to wait and see.

🙂

I am pleased your levels have come down . You must ave sooo worried. They don't like to bring our levels down too quickly as that can cause some unpleasant symptoms, also insulin dosing is very individual, basically it's a matter of what works for the person.

Fingers crossed it will be a short term problem for you

Hello A82 and welcome to the forum. 🙂

Hello and welcome @A82 it sounds as if your numbers are now coming down slowly but surely. It's better to bring your numbers down slowly as you have been so high this stops you feeling yuck and allows your body to adjust to more normal numbers, so worry not that you haven't had instant results. It does sound as if your team is on the ball.
