Hi. I am newly diagnosed, but have been suffering with appalling itchy dry skin. Excema patches and sores that won’t heal. I have tried all sorts but nothing stops the itch. Any suggestions ?

Hi 🙂

Have you had treatments from the doctor? Are you testing your blood sugars? If your levels are still slightly high then you will struggle to heal well
xx

Welcome to the forum @Bonniesmum.🙂 Not nice a bit more info is needed I agree with @Kaylz are you on any medication and have you spoken to a Health Care Professional (HCP) e.g. Doctor, Pharmacist even your Diabetes Nurse (DSN)? also are you drinking plenty of water to stop dehydration?. Has this started since diagnosis or have you had it for awhile? take care.

Welcome Bonniesmum

Do you know what you most recent HbA1c was?

Agreed do chat with your doctor, hopefully there is not a link with your blood glucose levels being excessively high.
Suggestions for dry itchy skin (this can happen for any number of reasons, age, medication, change in washing liquid powder for clothing, allergy to something you are wearing, or from a long term skin allergy, dermatitis, psoriasis, excema.
You mention Excema so presume your doctor will prescribed cream for you.
With diabetes its important not to let any wound get infected.
Anti histamine may help you if you have any to hand while you are waiting to see the doctor.
Pure Aloe Very gel or Cream may help to soothe the skin. (Body Shop, health food shop etc)
A himalayan salt bath or epsom salt bath maybe?

These are just my suggestions - I'm not a medical professional you understand.

Hope you find some relief soon.

Thanks everyone. I was only diagnosed Friday, and haven’t started my medication yet. I have had the itching for weeks and it comes in very intense waves. It is on the palms of my hands which have become leathery and thickened, and down the sides of my fingers also on the back of my hands. I had a medical pedicure last week and the practitioner said my numb feet actually have signs of some sort of very dry skin rash with sores on. I do not drink water or soft drinks, mostly tea and decaff coffee. I expect this has to change.

What are your levels like?

If I am high I feel so itchy but it’s because of my levels rather than a skin issue. I had horrific Eczema as a child so I know how it feels and it is very similar. I don’t think a lot of people get it and it’s only a new thing for me maybe 18 months or two years ago it started.

Staying cooler helps me, and anything nice on the skin. But because it’s not the skin it’s the veins or underneath the skin it makes little difference until my levels go back to normal

The only thing that stops my arm itching is a cold gel pad out of the freezer otherwise I just scratch and make it bleed.

It drives me nutty

Hi Bonniesmum Get some cortisol 0.2.% cream from the chemist it fixes my itches in a few minutes of rubbing it on, as someone who uses flotation therapy I would avoid epson salts baths if there’s any broken skin, it will sting a lot, otherwise it’s great for your skin and magnesium absorption
