Gary Culliton examines a new report on diabetes retinopathy screening in Cork and looks ahead to the roll out of the National Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme.
Six individuals were identified in 2012 who had significant eye disease and were not under ophthalmic care, a new report on a Cork screening initiative shows. A further 49 individuals required referral for expert review within two weeks.
The 2012 report on the specialised diabetes retinopathy screening initiative in Cork outlines the outcomes of the local initiative. The report was carried out by the HSE South Department of Public Health in consultation with Diabetes in General Practice and the Association of Optometrists Ireland, to evaluate the screening initiative which was initially set up in Cork in 2011, and repeated in 2012.
