Relationship to Diabetes
Steroid Induced Diabetes
I was unable to tolerate Metformin standard and Metformin slow release , awful GI effects , tried my best with them both but eventually had to admit defeat. Dr tried me on Gliclazide but that caused bad palpitations, dizziness and headaches. SO now......Sitagliptan has been thrown into the mix, I’m hoping this will work . My problem is that I have a number of health issues requiring various meds, a couple of which affect my GI anyway , so anything new seems to cause chaos . I have severe asthma for which I now take maintenance prednisolone, my T2 which was diagnosed in 2020 has been classed as steroid induced.

Hope the new combination works well for you Kathleen.

Let us know how you get on 🙂

It’s really rubbish when all you want is something that works so you can just get on with your life, but you have to go through all the trial and error first. If it helps, you may feel like poop but in your photo you look flippin fab! so at least that’s one thing. Keep smiling and hoping that it won’t be long before your insides are looking just as good!

EmmaL76 - Ahhhh thank you for that so kind, didn’t feel so fab on Metformin, spent most of my day on the toilet, rest of the time with stomach pain and nausea !! Yuk. Keeping my fingers crossed for Sitagliptan. Xx

Just wondering out loud (as it were 🙂 ) here ... are you 100% absolutely proven without shadow of a dout, Type 2? Yes I know about steroids and diabetes - but just but - let's imagine a person who may be on longish term steroids for whatever, starts 'hatching' T1 (cos I hatched mine for a number of months before the T1 popped out)!, is it 100% unarguably T2 and therefore must ONLY treated like it's 100% T2 full stop?

See - I think it sounds like to me whatever 'type' you are, you'd probably do one heckuvalot better on insulin.

Years ago a T2 lady on DSF who lived not far from me, her sister in law got carted off to hosp with some terrible chest prob and was in intensive care for more than a short time - however she pulled through - but Oh yes - diabetes. They treated her right off with insulin. As she recovered from the lung lurgy, her BG reduced so insulin doses were relaxed and she was able to stop taking insulin entirely after c 15 to 18ish months!

So @Kathleen68 - what tests did they actually do to prove exactly what type of D you have? (have you ever heard either C-peptide or GAD antibodies mentioned?)

trophywench- interesting ........no , no mention of C-peptide or GAD antiboldies. No tests other than Hba1c, as I have been on maintenance prednisolone for 18mths with years of sporadic courses -high dose, I was informed by GP it was steroid induced diabetes. Saw the surgery diabetes nurse in May, informed me that low carb diet must be maintained but probably won’t really help because of the constant steroids - very encouraging :( Back in August for another Hba1c . If I continue to be given meds that I can’t tolerate then perhaps further investigation is needed ?
