I'm in the process of planning my next trip and I'm thinking of doing something along the old Silk Road and central Asia - Samarkand, Dunshanbe, Almaty, Ashgabat etc.

Just wondering if anyone might have any D management tips for out there - I know plov is the national dish so carb management is something to think carefully about, but is there anything else in particular to watch out for? I'm relatively good with overseas travel but just wondering if anyone might have any advice.

Wow that's sounds really exciting. Um the only advise I have is there is a site ( unfortunately I don't know it of the top of my head but I sure if u google it it could be found). U basically put it the time u do your long acting insulin, tell it your destination and it calculates what time u do it in new destination it's pretty cool. I would also commend frilo (not sure if that wright but google might) travel packs for insulin. Rally good just soak them in water, the beads swell up and they keep your insulin really chilled. There like a small fabric case can get in various sizes, mine holds about 6 disposable pens in it. Best thing I have used for that thing. Hope the planning goes well and u have good travels!

If I can find the names for the things (the site and travel bag) will send u them, but they are at my dads house and not with me.

The coolbag thingy is a Frio pack.

My original one refused to re-inflate its crystals a few years back - and I'd only had it since about 1982! LOL

All normal things:

Check with a travel clinic or GP surgery about vaccinations - at least 3 weeks, but preferably at least 2 months, before travel.

Suitable travel insurance.

Plus, diabetes specific:

Personally, I prefer to keep insulin cartridges in a stainless steel vacuum flask, which is much cheap, robust, offers protection against both temperature extremes and physical knocks / vibration. Obviously needs to be empty of water when passing through airport security, but at all other times, cool tap water is fine.
