Since being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, my worries about the possibility of sight loss have increased considerably. One of the first things you learn is that diabetes is one of the major causes of blindness in the UK, along with numerous other ailments that are quite distressing to contemplate. This book covers sight loss from all angles (so to speak!). It is clear and comprehensive, covering all the main causes of sight loss or impaired vision, including macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and diabetes. Each topic is described in terms of its causes, diagnosis and available treatments, with helpful summaries and checklist finishing each chapter.
As a diabetic, I learn that I am also at much higher risk of glaucoma and cataracts, so these chapters were also of interest to me in addition to the chapter on diabetic retinopathy. The topics are not exhaustively discussed, but the main options are described satisfactorily, and there is an extensive appendix with links for further reading, and addresses of organisations that can provide help and advice. In addition to the chapters on eye problems, there are good chapters on mobility, help around the home and financial help, all with useful, practical tips of how to adapt to impaired vision should it occur.
Overall, very readable, concise, but packed with useful information!
