Hi my dr has put me on slow release Metformin and dipagliflozin I’ve been on them for 12 weeks and I feel sick most of the day! I drink plenty of water and take with food but it makes no difference. Any body else have this? Does it stop? I’m being put on starting too so fear it will get worse it’s really getting me down now. The tablets are working my blood glucose is going down and I’m losing weight it’s just the feeling sick

Sorry to hear you have been experiencing some side effects with your medication @Jennie2210 :(

Great to hear that your glucose levels are improving, but it does sound like you are struggling with the nausea.

Dapagliflozin seems more likely to give rise to thrush or a UTI.

Metformin does sometimes give rise to stomach upset and/or nausea.

Did you try Metformin on its own before the ‘flozin was added? Did you experience nausea on metformin alone?

We have several members whose metformin side effects have cleared up, but we also have others whose adverse reaction to metformin just stayed as a fixture and never improved :(

Originally I was on fast release Metformin and gliclazide but then they changed me to slow release and dipagliflozin so never had Metformin on its own.

@Jennie2210. Here is a copy and paste from one if my recent posts, in case it might apply to you too:

FYI Cleveland Clinic's Empagflozin page suggests you stop this medication right away when you have symptoms which sound similar to yours. I suggest you read the page and then do what you and/or your GP/DN think fit.

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/drugs/19382-dapagliflozin-tablets says the same:

This medication can cause a serious condition in which there is too much acid in the blood. If you develop nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, unusual tiredness, or breathing problems, stop taking this medication and call your care team right away. If possible, use a ketone dipstick to check for ketones in your urine.

BTW, and FYI again, you can get your weight and bg levels down by diet. However your GP/DN will know what is best for you. In my case it was a hefty dose of metformin but I was so scared of the side effects I never took a single tablet.
