Hi

I was sick a few times this morning I woke up to a bg of 11.2mmols after being sick first thing. It went up to 15.3 before lunch even though I had corrected twice before that, I corrected and injected for lunch and left it longer than usual for the correction to have time to work and 2 hrs post meal I'm at 14.0mmols:confused: so I've just corrected again. What else can I do to bring my bg's down?? the corrections don't seem to be doing anything at all :(

How much are you correcting, the higher you are, the more you need....

As you say your sick it may be a background adjustment you need on a temp basis until your feeling better....

Are you eating or is everything coming up? I think if you have a bug the body will be fighting it and this sends levels up - but someone else with more experience may be able to give you more info?
K's consultant told me to increase her Levemir a unit or two when she wasnt eating much due to a cold - sorry cant be much more help - hope someone else will be, and hope you feel better soon x

O and can you contact your DSN for advice?

1 unit brings me down by 3mmols but I've been giving myself double to try and shift it and I've corrected every 2 hours so far today and the lowest reading I've got down to is 11mmols that was at one point this morning. I've checked for ketones and there's nothing there.

Yes I've managed to eat a small breakfast and lunch and I haven't been sick since 9 this morning. I'm on lantus so any changes I make would come into effect in 3 days. I think it might just be a 24 hour bug maybe. I'm not sure if they replaced my last dsn because I haven't heard anything since he left about a replacement but I might try giving one of the nurses at the diabetes centre an email see what they suggest x

Its a tricky one, as you could keep upping the corrections then you might go low, best just to keep battling on today and see what happens tomorrow, if something similar then an increase in your background will help and might give your corrections more meaning......

There are laods of viruses doing the rounds. They seem to last two or three days. I hope you feel better soon

Hi Emma, sorry you have been feeling sick. Good news that there are no ketones. Although you may think your corrections are having no effect, it's probable they are having an effect and your levels would e higher yet without them - it's just that they are not having their normal BG reducing effects. Be careful to keep testing so that you don't suddenly crash, as you are stacking up quite a lot of insulin there - keep hypo remedies handy even though you may think you're not going to need them currently. Hope you settle back to good levels and are feeling better soon 🙂

Thank you everyone for your help. Northerner I think you are right I am worried I'll end up hypo so I'm going to stop correcting for a few hours now I've just checked it again and it's come down to 12.3mmols so hopefully it'll be down below 10 before dinner. Hubby took the day off to look after Jessica for me so if I do have a bad hypo he's here to help🙂

Hi Emma

I hope that you're feeling better now and your levels have become more stable. I was feeling off-it last week and my readings were high but then suddenly became low within a short space of time, I find it both frustrating and frightening, think my body was fighting infection. I posted something up here too and everyone's great at giving support and positive feedback, its great to know that I'm not alone.

Hi Emma,

What I'd do given that you're constantly high is up my basal insulin by a two or three units. Keep things like that until your BGs start to dip and then you'll know it's time to reduce the basal insulin again. Keep an eye out for ketones too.
