Hi have just had a very bad blip with my ibs unable to eat for 5 days just water saw my gp for advice. Was just told must eat to take metformin. Settled again now but any advise as to what i could do if i have a bad flare up again please

Just bumping in the hope someone can help you @Donna Gregory.
Were you able to tolerate anything other than water eg milk? What effects did metformin have on your gut when you weren't eating? Did GP consider any other diabetes medication, as metformin is known to cause bowel effects eg increased wind / farting, which doesn't sound a good idea with IBS.

Nothing else was suguested apart from bring a sample in if still going after 5 days and take imodium 3 at a time ! I did not take metformin for first few days but day 3 i took it and sugar was 9 i manged a plain probiotic yogurt but bad again next day. Had small banana next day took sugar down to 6.3 from 8 that morning. I have asked about changing to slow relase but was told not conacted as been on them since may so no link but has been worse since starting metformin more flare ups but been through 3 months of high stress. So was told it was that. My normal waking sugar is usally 6.5 -7.
