I have recently had a stinking cold and was following the sick day rules I was told, 10% of TDD every 2 hours plus normal boluses for meals (small as I had little appetite) and normal basal. It took nearly 3 days for my levels to come back to something approaching acceptable and I was wondering if anyone had any advice in how to speed up the process or if it is just a case of riding the storm until the virus passes?

Also on the 2 hourly regimen are you supposed to continue overnight? When I went to bed I was so exhausted that I don't think I could have done anything overnight but I suppose I could have done if push came to shove.

I have never had to take so much insulin ever, I even had to come back from my mums a day early (was visiting over Easter) as I would have run out if I needed to continue at the rate I was at! (didn't bother taking any spare as I didn't plan on getting ill - lesson learnt!)

Any advice on what I could have done better gratefully received!

Thanks

I think the idea behind the sick day rules is ketone management, so all you can do, in terms of blood sugar levels is ride it out unfortunately..........

if there are ketones, you can manage them safely with the sick day rules....

so you cant really get your levels back any quicker as it is the illness that dictates your levels......

what you done was the right thing to do......🙂

Join the club aoife, I seem to be injecting insulin for something to do & my bloods won't do anything.

Hope it passes soon 🙂

Thanks guys! It seems to have passed now, not quite back to normal (does such a thing exist?) but a lot closer. It's reassuring to know it's not just me!

I have no idea whether I had ketones, again lesson learnt and will take ketostix away with me next time once I get some that are in date! I just assumed they were there.

Was (and still am) quite concerned about my insulin requirements over those days, I was sure a massive hypo was just around the corner!

Does anyone do sick day rules through the night?

Not really as if I'm ill, I just sleep.

Last time I was ill I set my alarm a few times in the night (it killed me to get up to sort myself out)
