Joining this forum has been a great inspiration and motivation. I was diagnosed with prediabetes in May this year and I have been inspired by you all to eat healthily and lose weight. However...when I read other type 2's bg levels, it would seem to me that they are better than mine quite frequently. My morning bg was always around 6 but I have just about managed to get it below 6 now most mornings. This changes on the odd occasion I eat a 'naughty' meal then it can be mid 6s. In the daytime my bg tends to be mid to late 5s pre-meal, then low to mid 7s post meal. Today I had an unusual day in as much as I had a small baked potato and beans for lunch (I usually have salad/fish or chicken). Tonight I went straight to college after work (studying for a degree) and picked up a chicken pasta from Tesco. I ate this at 5.30 pm and at 10pm tested 6.7. Seems high for me and given that it was over four hours since I ate it is bothering me. I'm hungry too but am worried about snacking because my bg will go too high before bed!! Do you think I should go back to the docs? I wonder if I am fully diabetic (if that's the term)! I am not due back until next May (a year after diagnosis) which seems a heck of a long time away. I have lost just over 2 stones in weight with another stone and a half to ideal BMI. I'm wondering if that will make the difference. Am just concerned and although I have no other symptoms I wonder just what's going on with my body sometimes! Any thoughts anyone? Thankyou Katie:confused:

Katie, I would say you are doing fine. Diabetes (or pre-diabetes) is a very individual thing so it's difficult to compare your self with others, even if it appears they are in a similar position to you. Even non-diabetics will have variations between themselves. Your levels sound very good, and although others may report lower levels there is nothing in yours that would cause concern, in my opinion, as they are well within 'normal' range. The weight loss and change of diet will be doing you a world of good so I would keep on doing what you are doing. 🙂

Thank you Alan. That makes me feel much better! Do you think having a snack with a bg of 6.7 will push my bg too high overnight? I get really paranoid about my fasting level because that's where my numbers seem to stick! It's not often I'm hungry in the evening, but I think it's because I had such an early evening meal due to college🙂 Katie

How about a protein snack like cheese, that can often help overcome the hunger pangs 🙂

I passed on the supper last night, but still got up to a waking bg of 6.7! This is equivalent to when I've had a Chinese or something similar the night before! Could it really be that the bakes potato and beans and chicken pasta salad yesterday have caused this rise both last night and this morning? Am not too happy this am!! Katiex

...and now after taking my multivitamins and a cup of tea, 7.2!! Now I'm in a quandary! Breakfast or not? Should I wait and take a snack with me (I have to leave for work) or eat a low carb breakfast. This is so confusing!😡

Hi Kate, you're doing fine; I think you're just having a wobbler. I can't have jacket potatoes or baked beans because both; separately; shoot my sugars up. You're doing everything you've been asked to do; healthy eating; increased physical activity, losing weight - you can't do anymore but carry on with your goals. Sometimes I find I get disheartened at night and then in the morning feel more positive; wonder if its due to being tired especially, like me, you work full-time and do extra study afterward, kids, husband, exercise.... Keep up the good work; you're doing brilliantly. You're my support buddy so I'm not going to let you get down.... Amanda x 🙂

Katie, loosing the weight and getting to a normal BMI will help. Although I'm at BM1 23 and my waking is often in the 6's 🙄

I tend to find that grabbing a bite to eat soon after I get up tends to help with stopping my going any higher in the morning.

Because we eat dinner around 6ish, I'm usually a bit peckish in the evening. Usually I attack a little cheese and some chinese leaf lettuce. Sometimes a small number of nuts as a variation - but nuts can send me up overnight.

Katie - in answer to your question about what to eat this morning - definitely some breakfast, preferably low(ish) carb. Otherwise, your liver will continue to push out sugar from its stores.

I wonder, like Copepod, whether if you'd had a small amount if protein last night, and a low carb breakfast this morning whether your levels would have been a bit better. Very difficult to know, but the action of the liver can throw a spanner in the works and I've read others saying that this approach helps.

If it was only down to what we ate it would be SO much easier!

Thankyou to everyone who's taken the time to reply. I really, really appreciate your support and advice. I ate a yogurt and a handful of nuts (walnuts) at breakfast and an hour later my bg was down to 6.2. My pre-lunch bg was 5.8 and now is 5.5 2 hours after eating, so blip seems to be over! I wonder then if it was because I had a carby day (baked potatoes, beans, pasta etc) that my bg was so high, so will avoid these from now on. I also regret not having a piece of cheese before bed. Will try this if it happens again. Thankyou all! xx
