Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all, I am slightly Worried about my 7 year old daughter. Her thirst is increasing and she has wet the bed only once but its
Soemthing that she has never done before.
I havnt noticed any other symptoms other than the thirst and urinating more often,
I have a blood glucose machine abs tested her this morning and her fasting levels were 7.4 i am right to believe this normal range so I can relax a bit! ?? Thanks xx

Hi and welcome

7.4 is very slightly over the optimal range of 4-7 but considering the accuracy levels of BG meters it could potentially still be within range. It is not a reading that I would be overly concerned about or likely to cause excess urination and consequent thirst.... which usually occurs above 10 more often mid teens and above but that morning fasting reading doesn't rule out that things might be going astray at other times of the day, particularly after eating. You could test before a meal and then 2 hours after maybe something like beans on toast which is a pretty carb heavy meal and see how her body responds to the carbs and that might give you an idea if something is starting to go wrong, but BG meters are not generally suitable for diagnosing diabetes, they just give you a rough idea that something might be amiss.

If you are concerned though that something isn't right, then you really should consult your GP.

Hi thanks for the reply,

I have got appointment with Gp n Monday . I just worrying would I haves need to take to her to out of hours over the weekend as reading online it’s scared me lol But from watching her observation she is totally fine on herself.

I just tested her blood now before food it’s 9.3 but she has eaten sweets from her party bag today ( it’s her birthday ) so I’ll test again on 2 hours is it?

Make sure she washes her hands thoroughly before testing her blood sugar @Purplerain210881 The tiniest, invisible dot of food can affect results as can some other items.

The symptoms of Type 1 diabetes are the 4 Ts - toilet, thirsty, tired, thinner. The thirst is unquenchable and the toilet visits can be every few minutes. Most importantly, if you suspect Type 1 diabetes, you need to seek medical advice. My blood sugar was approaching 30 when I was diagnosed.

Why do you have a glucose meter? Do you have diabetes yourself? (Your avatar says Type 2)

Thirst
Toilet
Tired
Thinner

So if weight starts dropping off her and she starts falling asleep at the drop of a hat or almost constantly craving ridiculous amounts of very sweet stuff - THEN worry.

If not it is probably just the hot and 'close' weather.

Those first two have the medical names of Polydipsia and Polyuria, and are jokingly referred to as the two Polly's - and in any case - when you drink gallons, you pee gallons - hardly need a medical degree to know that bit, doh. Difference is though (I was 22 so can both remember it and put it into proper English) I could down a whole pint of water, put the glass down on the table and 30 seconds later be just as thirsty as I was before I drank the pint. It literally is an unquenchable thirst and I don't recommend it.

I’m glad you’re seeing the GP and would agree that an HBA1C would be helpful. It’s also worth taking a urine sample if you can. Her numbers aren’t scary but you need an answer as you’re concerned and that’s a perfectly reasonable reason to see the GP. I had concerned for a couple of months before I went to the GP. My daughter seemed too well from everything I read online. It can be hard to know if any visible weight loss if just from growth spurts (we don’t routinely weight our kids). By the time we did see the GP she was starting to become unwell (but it was caught before she was in DKA).

Very glad that you've got an appointment as if you're worried, it's always best to get these things checked out.

There are a few things you've said that suggest there are some blood sugar issues but then again, they could be symptoms of other things so your GP can do the required tests to gain some clarity.

Keep a close eye on her and if there are any changes or it's just not sitting right with you, give 111 and they can advise.

Hope the GP appointment goes well @Purplerain210881

Always a worry with kids isn’t it?!
