ALL WOMEN with diabetes should take fish oil pills during pregnancy, say British scientists investigating the link between blood sugar problems and low levels of two important fatty acids.

The experts believe supplementation will reduce the risk of children born to women with diabetes developing insulin problems in later life.

They also found that top-up fatty acids protect against premature delivery.

The study, led by Dr Yoeju Min from the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition at London Metropolitan University, offers new hope for women with diabetes and holds important clues to the prevention and treatment of the condition.

Around 3.7 million people in the UK have diabetes and one in 250 pregnancies are now complicated by the condition.
