this week i was told i was type 2 db .my last reading 3 months ago was 47 which i understand to be pd.should i have been told by the doctor that i was pre db so i could have been more prepared .it concerns me they havent told me in time (not that 3 months should make that big step up)not looking to blame anyone but wud liek to think i cud have acted had i known i was pre db

I believe it's normal to be told to make 'lifestyle changes' to try to get it back to normal levels.
That means a change of diet and getting more exercise.

I can empathise. Last summer my HbA1c was something like 47.4 (i.e. not far away from being rounded up to 48 - not sure if it actually works like that haha). I was not told, but my surgery uses an app and all the blood results go on there, so I did see the result and make changes. Unfortunately I found out this summer that I have slow onset type 1. But I digress, I was really shocked that no-one contacted me about the result. Goodness knows what state I would have been in this year if I hadn’t made those changes. I imagine it only flags up if it’s 48+ though, but I don’t know. Curious to hear others’ thoughts on this!

You’ve found the right place for support and information. I’ve found this forum and the wisdom here so helpful!

Edited to add: I was prediabetic previously so perhaps they just figured that I already knew… although I would have appreciated a heads up that I was right on the edge of being diabetic!

Sure my wife's was 46 when told she was prediabetic after having routine blood checks, it give her enough time to do something about it & reverse diagnosis, surprised your gp didn't tell you.

I think perhaps it is partly because ‘prediabetes’ isn’t really an official diagnosis in the UK - it’s not a formally recognised condition, it’s more a shorthand way of saying ‘at risk of diabetes’ and it’s a terms we have sort of adopted from the US over a number of years.

We have had several members over the years who weren’t told about their T2 diagnosis in a timely way, some for several months or even years, until it later gets mentioned in passing, “That will be because of your diabetes” “Ummmm… what diabetes?!”

So it’s rare, but certainly not unheard of, and it can be distressing for the person involved :(

Hope you are able to bounce back from it, and begin to make some changes to your diet and levels of activity to steer your glucose levels towards the normal range. Have you been given any advice about how to do that? Have you developed a plan?

thanks all that svery kind.its made worse because ive been unable to work for 12 years due to anxiety due to some trauma ptsd .i do feel a bit let down as having a heart attack last year the future doesnt bode well.my doctors really are useless in 12 years ive seen 28 doctors never the same one .i should move but im a bit limited where i am .anyhow the plan is lose some weight and cross my fingers it doesnt affect my heart too much ..funny i asked the doctor what my reading was three months ago and he said it was ok but i saw on the screen 47 he did look a bit sheepish as if he knew what i was getting at .

Doctors are supposed to do numerous things and don't. Not all doctors are the same. Like any profession.

I take six or seven different types. I'm supprised they all work together.
