Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I was diagnosed with Type 1 two and half weeks ago. HBA1C was at 11.4.

I was hoping to feel better by now but am still suffering a fair bit. I did have blurred vision but that has now rectified itself but continue to be very cold and shivery. Feet and hands are particularly cold. I also have muscle twitches in my arms and legs. Is this normal?

When I was diagnosed it was May/June 2008 and throughout that summer I was FREEZING!!!! No matter how hot it was, I had heating on in the house and had to snuggle beneath duvets in the middle of the day! I even developed chilblains on my toes for the first time in nearly 50 years! This may have been partly due to the extreme loss of weight I suffered prior to diagnosis, but I also think it must have been a physiological consequence of the diabetes and getting used to insulin. After that first summer, and the ensuing very cold winter, I was and am fine. So, hopefully it won;t be as long for you but it does sound similar. If it is worrying you though, it's worth getting checked out by a doctor. 🙂

I remember being freezing when diagosed in April! I thought it must be because I had lost all my fat reserves, and also (only my theory, probably wrong!) because I had been burning fat in DKA I thought maybe that would have provided some kind of internal heating which I had then lost!

I reacclimitised, in time. Just wrap up warm!

Carly do get cold hands and feet often!! (Also shivering can be a sign of hypo too)
