Hi all

Received first letter today about shielding was surprised to get it.Why am I more at risk now than I was last week? Unsure how to take it really. Suddenly I am being told to stay indoors until 31 march. Getting vaccine on Monday which will make feel safer.

Any views welcome

Welcome to the forum @Berksps

I don’t think you are suddenly thought to be at higher risk, I think it’s more that there is a much greater understanding of the nuances of risk, and the likelihood of factors contributing to the chance of serious illness if you were to catch the virus.

I believe Diabetes UK did a lot of work on this. Without the official ‘shielding letter’ people were not able to access the support they needed to make shielding more possible, and as the data emerged and were analysed the additional risk factors became clearer.

Initially it was a fairly broad brush approach of particular illnesses or situations which they knew made people ‘Clinically Extremely Vulnerable’ (plus anyone else that GPs knew ought to be given extra protection), but now there is better understanding of additional factors which can convey risk to people who are in the Clinically Vulverable (rather than Extremely Vulnerable) group, so the letters are being sent out to those people.
