This recipe uses mashed carrot and swede instead of spuds for the topping.

500gms minced beef
1 medium onion peeled and chopped
100 grams sliced mushrooms
300 grams each carrot and swede, chopped
1 beef stock cube dissolved in half a pint of boiling water (or half a pint of fresh beef stock if you have it)
S&P to taste
A little oil

Cook the carrot and swede till tender, season and mash together. Heat the oil in a pan and soften the onion, add the mince and brown it well, then add the mushrooms and the stock. Season and place the meat in an oven proof dish and spoon the mashed veg over the top. Place in a hot oven and bake for about 25 minutes.

MMMMMM i make this regular it is delish

I've only just started doing it with veg instead of mash. You could ring the changes and use sweet potato instead. Oh and I like to put a little fresh ground nutmeg in with the swede and carrot.

your very good Ali at all this cooking malarcky

I love cooking, always have. The whole family does in fact. Growing up as we did all over the world, we learned about all kinds of different cuisines and picked up recipes from all over the shop. It was always a battle in our house to be first in the kitchen to do the cooking and first out again when it was time to clean up.:D

In addition, my granddad was a master confectioner, it's funny for someone who's allergic to eggs to say, but I'm good at cakes and pastries too. Can't eat them of course, but can make them.

Sounds lovely, Alison. Thanks. I love to try new recipes! I have been making soup lately and love to experiment with it. 🙂

id add a couple of dashes of worcester sauce to it as this adds a kick to it. also when browning mice add an oxo to it as this brings the flavour out in it.

That's an unusual addition! Field mouse, I presume, from the lamb pastures?😉:D

I often add a pack of cootage pie vegetables, I buy them prepared because I ccan never manage to chop them that fine and a tin of diced tomatoes for variation

FOr the topping we sometimes use sweet potato, it has a different flavour and texture.

great ideas..... I've never thought of putting carrot and swede mash on top instead of potato..... although I've never been diabetic before lol 😛

will give that a try for sure 🙂

I make Cottage Pie because I don't eat lamb. I use any veg I have handy to put in it and plenty more veg on the side 🙂 Sheena
