I last ate at 8pm last night. My basal the last few days has been fine and I've had exactly correct levemir doses

9pm 12.2. 3 units of humalog
3am 19.7 (hadn't had a hypo) 7 units of humalog

8am (hadn't had a hypo) 17.9  5 units of insulin

Waited an hour and then walked Susie for an hour
End of walk 18.3 😱
glad that I'm at home today so that I can keep throwing the humalog at it

Sorry to hear that the Fairy has been casting her dust over you Amanda :( Is there a possibility that your humalog needs replacing? Hope things settle down to better levels soon! 🙂

No pearls of wisdom to offer Amanda, just sending you hugs and hoping you get things sorted and have a good day. XXXXX

Thanks Northener the Humalog worked perfectly yesterday so don't think it is that. There are various things that I would like to do to the diabetes fairy at the moment

oh dear Amanda, what did you eat last night? It is often not a good idea to go for a walk when your sugar levels are so high because the sugar is in the blood and not being taken up by the muscles. Your body will respond by releasing more sugar from the liver because it thinks you are being starved!

Thanks Natalie. I had a small Shepherds pie last night. I had to walk Susie This morning but also thought that because I had injected five units of insulin an hour before that would help but obviously not. Just had another five units of insulin so hoping that will do something

Did you eat anything with the 5 units of Humalog? Might be more successful in bringing down levels to have something to eat, with insulin to cover any carb content, plus a correction dose. Of course you may have done this, but I couldn't see any mention of food (or even a drink) before you walked your dog.

Thanks Copedod I hadn't eaten anything since 8pm last night and had just drunk Diet Coke. Since reading you suggestion I've had two dry biscuits. These high sugars are making me feel very tired but I've got a pile of marking that I must do (but would rather sleep until the BG levels are better)

Yikes! That sounds really frustrating. Like Alan, my first thought was that the Humalog might have lost potency (I had this a few times in the years I used it and it did seem to happen very suddenly). If it were me, and I knew basal was fine I'd swap the humalog for fresh anyway.

Don't think it could be sites because there are several jabs involved.

Any chance you could come down with something in the next few days and your BGs have skyrocketed early?

Thanks Mike, I've swapped the humalog for the latest 5 units but BG is still 17!!!! Hope I'm not coming down with something because I'm really busy until the Christmas holiday - I don't mind being busy but I can't afford to be ill again this year. Keeping my fingers crossed that the BGs come down in the next hour otherwise I may phone the DSN

Have you tested for ketones Amanda?

Just measured dipstick ketones and it is second from the top😡 BG is now down to 14.4 but I feel sick (not my usual nausea). Now that I've seen that are ketones not sure what to do after all of the insulin that I've had but guess it is good that BG is on its way down

Only extra you can do is keep drinking sugar free fluids, to help flush out ketones. Good news blood glucose is on its way down.

Hopefully the ketones will decline too now that the insulin appears to be doing its stuff 🙂

Have tested again and still have ketones so have spoken to DSN. She has said that as long as I have high ketones I've got to inject 10 units of correction humalog every two hours😱 plus try to eat and have extra insulin to cover that. Obviously continue levemir as normal She said that I need to do the injections every 2 hours throughout a 24 hour period until it is under control.......and if the ketones persist to go to A&E a\s an emergency. Going to have to force myself to eat even though I have no appetite! What fun!! Thak you for all of your suggestions

Sorry to hear this Amanda :( Might it be an idea to have a flask of soup that you can have a little of, but regularly, if you don;t feel much like eating? Or sip a sugary drink? Hope you can get things under control and don't have to resort to A&E. That sounds like an awful lot of insulin and also it will be stacking if you're having it every 2 hours so lots of checking please!

Hi Amanda,.........awful! I've been in your situation before a few times, my thoughts are:

Is your pen broken? it could be that you think it is delivering insulin but actually it's not.....but mechanicaly it sounds like it is? Are you priming before injecting?

Are you injecting into a lyperhytrophy area?

You might have a dodgy batch of insulin?

You are coming down with an illness?

You are suffering from more stress than usual?

I hope you are feeling better soon and your numbers improve, often it is something simple that causes these unexplained results.

Thanks Phil and Alan for all of your suggestions. my stress levels are currently very low and until these wild BGs I was very happy. I've changed insulin pens today and had two lots of humalog from the different pen. Had 5 units at 1030 from the new pen. Ketones still there at 12.45 but not as high so I had another 7 units of humalog and six Plain Tuc biscuits (haven't got any soup and want to avoid sugary drinks unless I go hypo) BG is now down to 9.9 but with all of this extra insulin would have expected a massive hypo by now! Going to test every 15 minutes a bit excessive but I want to make sure that it doesn't start going up again or too low. Just so glad that this didn't happen yesterday when I was teaching! Will keep you posted if anything strange happens........want to sort it out because meant to be going Christmas shopping this evening🙂

Be careful Amanda....in my experience your levels may well crash! I would maybe leave your Chrimbo shopping to another day when you are more stable.......shopping makes me hypo at the best of times!! :D
