Tracey, it sounds obvious now, but getting two bins is a great idea - and I might be able to sneakily get a second one without having to ask my GP for yet more on my prescripiton. Mwhahahahah...

Silly question fast approaching.......are sharps bins available on prescription then? My GP told me they werent, or perhaps more likely he didnt want to pay for them?

If you guys are getting sharps bins on prescription I shall defo ask for one (or two as well).

Cheers x

Mine's on prescription.

Re: prescriptions for sharps bins - I wonder if it depends who funds it? As I said, the council provide/collect mine, so not sure if the costs are reclaimed from the PCT or taken from the council tax.

The costs involved in sharps bins issue and collection include cost of providing the bin(s), cost of collection, cost of disposal (incineration) etc . Generally NHS provides the bin itself, but local councils pay the collection and disposal costs.

The best contribution we can make is to reduce the amount of materials we use and thus reduce the amount that needs to be disposed of. So, sharps which have come into contact with body fluids should go in a rigid container, but there is no need for plastic needle covers or paper lids off needles etc. I reckon that if you chop off the metal part of the needle with a Safe Clip, that renders what's left of the pen needle safe to dispose of in a rigid sealed container in landfill waste. And the fewer the needles and lancets you use, the fewer need to be disposed of.

I got my initial sharps bin on prescription. Still got that so I could use it again but they only gave me a small 1 litre bin. The council give me nice big 4 litre bins. 😎

Hi Lula! I have only filled one sharps bin so far. Here in Southampton the council have a collection service - you just ring them up and arrange a date and then leave it out on the doorstep (or you can have them knock on the door if concerned about leaving outside). They leave an empty bin behind.

I would have thought that there is no hardship in a GP surgery accepting them, as they must have lots of sharps themselves to dispose of regularly through the general course of their work. Receptionists often get a bad reputation for being officious, over-dramatic and obstructive. I'm afraid that, in my experience it's a well-deserved reputation, as I've met some extremely unpleasant people performing that job. I'm sure they're not all like that, so don't get mad at me!😱

I also get the collection service, but with New Forest Council.

sharps bins

until 2 weeeks ago in Bexhill the company 😡 Verdant was collecting my bin then last week they told me to call the council and told me that until i had a reference number and a form that my gp should send to them [something about the duty of care of sharps disposal ] Verdant cannot collect my bin any more funny they have donne this for nearly 2 years without problems what happen 2 weeks ago is burocratic madness

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the comments and advice, this is all very useful. I will see what local council advice is in my area. At least I know that that they will take sharps at my surger, however unwelcoming they are!!
I use that clip-it device too for needle ends, and think its a wonderful invention! Many people have commented on how nifty it is 🙂

(sorry not sure what was going on with my italics there! and I meant 'surgery'!!)

Hi Lula, I wrote a poem 'The Rude Receptionists' in honour of your surgery,
