Hi since being put on the pump i was given a huge sharp bin. I have been putting in there the canuala sets in there and the aplicator as they both have sharps on the end. Am i meant to be just actually putting the sharp bit in there?. Ive also being putting my cartridge with left over insulin in there and the tubing with the canula...and syringe used to draw the insulin. I thought this was all best as Medical waste. Now am about to take this to the place to burn....am i to get in trouble? Some of it you cant really get at to snip the sharp bit off and what does everyone else do with the redundant cartridge if it shouldnt go in there?

Hi, I put anything with a needle into the sharps bin, but all other stuff (packaging, used cannula, used cartridge etc.) in the normal household rubbish. I don't see this stuff as being any more "contaminated" than, say, a tissue that I've blown my nose on. The sharps bin gets full quickly enough even so!

Hi Ash,
the sharps been is that and only that a sharps bin. Any waste insulin put down the sink.
Not sure what set you are using but the applicator on most set inserters come to bits so all you do is put the needle in the sharps container. 🙂

Ahh thanks i shall have a look at the inserters and see whether comes to bits.i use animas vibe. And cartridges etc now in the normal bin! 😉

So which inserts do you use? If it's the inset 30 you will see 2 little clips under the needle give them a bend and pull the handle back the whole lot slide out then just flip the needle holder off of the base. 🙂
Not to sure about the 90* inset but have a poke and mind your fingers 😱
Also are you sure the 90* isn't an all in one ie., the needle retracts into the base so it's sealed in? I haven't looked at one for years so can't remember.

Worst sets I ever tried for sharps bin fillage were Mios.

Even pulled apart the plastic thinghy was really bulky.

More recently I've taked to cutting the ends off cannulas with scissors and only putting in the bits with needles on. That saves a surprising amount in itself!

Thanks all for the advice. Mine are 90 degree ones. Im gonna have a try and seeing if comes apart! Will try not to stab myself!🙂
