Servere joint pain since starting insulin.

Hi to all,

I have been having severe joint pain in my back hip n fingers since starting on insulin had to take my rings off swollen fingers.

I still didnt manage to get hold of any info regarding insulin spikes after meals.
I am going to insulin group weds so will see what they say.

I tried phoning them a few times no response which is not very good when first on insulin.

I assume you have been started on a synthetic insulin. There are many reports of arthralgia (joint pain) with synthetic insulin, but the cause isn't known. A change to porcine insulin usually fixes it. You need to talk to your diabetes nurse or doctor to try a switch.

There are, of course, many causes of such pains, but occurring as soon as you started the insulin, then that is likely to be the cause.

Try and see your doctor or DSN as soon as possible. May also pay to talk to NHS Direct if you're in a lot of pain now and see what they advise. Hope you feel better and get something sorted soon

Hi Irene, like you I started getting joint pain since going onto basal insulin. Will talk to doc about it at next visit. I did mention it the last visit but he said arthritis is common in people with diabetes, but I know it only came on after a few weeks on abasaglar.
