Relationship to Diabetes

Am having serious symptoms suggesting a pace maker may be needed, urgently. The symptoms are dizziness, feeling faint, extreme chest pain, heart palpitations, weakness, fatigue, headaches, poor sleep, feeling sick, shortness of breath, pulse rate up and down, sometimes over 100pm, no exercise now, makes me feel sick, just sleeping mostly. All due to chronic stress.

Had a dementia test and quite a bit of damage has been done, suggesting that, internally, too, there has been considerable damage. My GP gave me a full blood count which required no action. And my blood pressure reading is 149/85mmHg.

A nurse suggested all these symptoms could be related to diabetes. Think there is more to it than that, perhaps indicating tachycardia or syncope, needing urgent treatment.

Can someone advise me on how to convince my GP that all these symptoms are not connected to diabetes, but rather the very serious conditions mentioned above, that require immediate action...?

Sorry about your problems. Not being a dr. I can’t diagnose. But what you are describing sounds like anxiety and possible panic attacks. Not everything is related to diabetes. Worrying and stress increases your anxieties. I would book another appointment with a different gp.

It could very well be related to stress Lydia but the least I’d expect with your symptoms would be an ECG done and perhaps a holter monitor to check cardiac function over a 24 hr period. See a different GP and ask for a referral to a Cardiologist. Severe stress that could cause such severe physical symptoms would need treatment in itself that your doctor should address. My advice would be to see someone else.

Thank you for clarifying that. I shall press ahead with a new discussion with my GP...

Yes, I think it is. Stress related. And they do need to be treated with more seriousness. So I shall refer myself back to my GP for further examination.

You may need anti-anxiety medication and counselling Lydia. Just because physical symptoms are caused by stress, doesn’t mean they can be written off. Good luck with getting the help you need.

That's a good idea. Bit worried it could be something extremely life threatening. So filled with anxiety there. Never mind. I shall look into this..

Exactly anxiety. Feels like you are having a heart attack and going to die classic panic attack symptoms. If your doc did a full blood count and found nothing alarming. There lies the answer. After thinking about it if your gp seen you he obviously didn’t think your symptoms were life threatening. If he did he would ‘ve sent you to hospital in an ambulance.

Actually, thinking on things, these symptoms are suggestive of more than an anxiety attack. My blood pressure is 149/85mmHg and my pulse rate regularly goes over 100pm by quite a margin. These two together would seem to indicate something serious is happening internally. Checking online, the condition seeming to be suggested was either tachycardia or syncope. With all these other serious symptoms it is evidently indicating something urgently is a missed. More than just anxiety etc.

If I were to have a stress exercise test and it indicated a high level in pulse rate would this be enough to convince the doctors that there is something internally going wrong?

Some doctors don’t like you googling symptoms as you can misdiagnose as you are I think. Believe me if you were that concerned you would call an ambulance. If your pulse was 200 + then I’d dial 999. 100 plus is high but not that bad. Tour de France riders have a pulse rate of 180+ when cycling for long periods of time.

I have blood pressure and your figures arn’t Too bad. The first is a little high the second is just above 80. So that’s just in high blood pressure range. Yes it needs lowering but it isn’t excessive.

Yes, that is all true, but having some actual facts on these topics allows me to know precisely what is relevant to a topic and those which might not be the important ones. There are other very serious symptoms to be taken into consideration as well so I shall pursue this with my doctor..
