Would like to share with you how much SMBG is helping both dad and myself.
I wouldn't go into all my previous details but will shout Thank you to everyone here who has posted and advised through various threads on this forum.

Although we are part funding strips not that we have been refunded totally (yet) we don't ask for them all of the time. I bought dad several pots so we can continue to test as we both feel it is vital especially when dad didn't have sweet stuff etc to cut out

The change in dad and his understanding of how carbs and exercise affect his BG levels is amazing. He is really enjoying his meals now even if I get the odd one wrong! We still have a wee bit of confusion regarding the time he should exercise (i.e. immediately after food or wait a little while and then exercise) last week he was going ASAP & readings were a but different than now when we decided he should wait a little then exercise. Both of us are addicted to exercising now although need to work out something for wet/windy/cold days and nights. Apart from gardening as part of his day the specific exercise is x2 brisk walks a day about 50-60 mins each.

This has not only shown steady readings with the odd blip (although nothing above the range set for him, I count a blip in the 7's) feel so proud of dad as the constant walking with his crutch has given him confidence to the point I can see he is walking much more upright and yesterday took me by surprise by cutting the bottom lawn! A few weeks ago he tried but just couldn't do it he felt so good to have done this without depending on someone else 🙂
The other bit will be a challenge but I think he will get there sometime.

We shop together now at the farmers market dad selecting food he likes which is so helpful to me. Nothing processed and all tested as we go along. We don't test lots of times each day just before and after dinner at night or if testing something new maybe an extra test. I have stocked up on strips until we ask for another prescription.

Once again I have typed too much but really wanted to share this with you and thank everyone for all guidance given. I am contemplating writing to our elected representative just to add an actual case for SMBG not expecting anything to come off it but I really do see the benefits.

It isn't plain sailing as everyone with diabetes knows but feeling a little more in control than waiting for the big result is something we would never have thought about. We have found foods which affect dad and I would have been making these not knowing they needed to be controlled or avoided.

Sorry I made it even longer!

What a wonderful, positive post Pippin, and testimony both to the value of self-monitoring and yours and your dad's efforts to take control of his diabetes. I am sure this will provide lots of hope and confirmation of the value of testing - perhaps something they can relate to reluctant-to-prescribe healthcare professionals! 🙂

And you didn't write too much! 😉

Though it can be a pain when you test for the first time this morning and it is 8.8! Cue a very loud WHAT!?!

Second test a few seconds later 5.2.

A head scratcher it seems.

Thank you Northerner really hope it will help someone just as other posts have helped us. He went for his afternoon walk without me came home to test at 4.7 I think I keep him back now as he really must have had a brisk walk!

I know we will meet 'oh dear how did that happen!' but keeping a food diary and the test results has proved to be a huge benefit. Just hope dad's weight will stabalise as the balance now is using up calories with the exercise! His knee has strengthened even though I dont think he will be able to walk totally unaided.

This is a great story Pippin and well done to both of you for sticking to your guns. When the doctor tells you that's good, you should tell him/her it's because of the testing!

Well done Pippin and Dad!

It's great when you can see such great results from your efforts. It really makes it all worthwhile.

Andy 🙂

Huge blip today don't know what the metre will show later but after a fabulous day out with dad yesterday. (He remarked on how good he felt and how much he enjoyed the day and all meals I made) this morning gout is back :( I let so down as it's his ankle so both crutches are back.

Reading the list of ph balanced foods and those suitable to eat during a gout attack just takes away all the fish, vegetables, cereals we had balanced for diabetes :( exercise will be minimal apart from the effort he has to use to get anywhere. His diabetes diet was so good and now this. The monitor will prove useful to see what this has done as he now has painkillers and tablets for gout to disrupt the graph

No need to reply as there are others needing help with levels etc I just had to post to help my mind.

Hi Pipppin well done to both you and your dad. I'm sorry to hear about the gout but try to think of it as a blip - it won't affect all of the hard work that you've done so far and it will get better so you can do all of those things again. The way that you have both changed your lives is a huge inspiration to many of us🙂

Thank you AJ and Northerner I can hear dad's crutches as he shuffles along the corridor trying to maintain the excercise he has started to enjoy.
Will have to be careful with both diets and hope to get back to the one he enjoys the most.

That's a shame. I would suggest relaxing the BG a little in order to get the gout on the mend as long as he doesn't feel poorly at slightly elevated BGs. You can only control so much.🙂

Hi Pippin, sorry to hear about your Dad, has he had a uric acid blood test. I've just been through another gout attack and my Uric acid test showed that the levels were too high (score 1 for the Doc). She has put me on Allopurinol which is to reduce the uric acid in the blood and touch wood I am feeling a lot better. She also put me on Colchicin (3 miniscule tabs a day) which is to remove the inflammation and the crystals which cause the painful joints. Unfortunately they seem to upset my stomach so I've stopped taking those.
Get your Dads GP to do a uric acid test and ask about Allopurinol. (P.S. bg readings haven't been affected)

Thank you I'm so close to tears as pre-meal reading was 8.2 :( he hasn't had this after meals since testing. Think the exercise he tried has made him worse pain is evident :(

Vicsetter thank you for adding the fact you have the same situation. Dad's last uric acid test was way up the scale although this is the first bad attack for a little while. He has started to take his Colchicin again. The Dr gave him a supply for times like this although he has a funny dose as in a bash with them for three days then off and maybe back again depending if the attack has subsided. I get confused with these tablets (sort all the rest he takes out) dad knows the routine he is trying to take minimal painkillers just now.*
The other tablet you mention I think the Dr has mentioned this not too sure why he hasn't given him any.*

He sees one Dr who is interested in the gout and another thinks about his diabetes. Last time we had to keep stressing to the one treating gout to remember his BG levels.*

I can sympatise with you as attacks are really horrible to watch. His bad knee (arthritis) he was coping with and now this has to be his other leg/ankle. He seemed to have ease then after trying to exercise he couldn't hide the fact he is in pain & hungry. I had to let him have carbs even if he can't exercise tonight.*

I am using the DUK app and have made a folder in Talking points to show the nurse readings when this happens.*

It's very kind of all of you being here to support us. Thank you

Dad sends his thanks he is going to ask about the other tablet. I was mistaken it was a neighbour who mentioned this when he first had gout, not the Dr. If he has to go he will be asking

Update: dad did his best with modified exercise after dinner. Just checked his bg x2hrs 5.6 🙂 so pleased as I thought he might go even higher than his pre-meal
