Seeking advise

Short version

47yr Male, overweight and not really active.

Had a blood test and they said my HbA1c was at 49mmol/mol, nurse wanted a repeat after two weeks and it came back as 54mmol/mol
She said I had diabetes but not what type, said I needed to look at diet and get some checks and someone would be in touch,
What should I expect? What next?

Welcome @Rainbowhawk It looks like Type 2 diabetes. As you’re not too far into the diabetes zone, you might be able to avoid medication and treat it by changing your diet and losing weight. The checks will probably be things like weight, blood pressure, etc, and possibly a check of your feet (diabetes can damage the feet).

Don’t worry. I’m sure you can improve things with some small changes.

Welcome @Rainbowhawk

Get active is my advice. Sounds like you're not doing that bad with 49mmol/mol. Do some exercise, get fit and lose weight in the process. Getting active will also make keeping in target easier. Lucky ones get a natural high out of it.

What's next is becoming aware of what's involved and keeping those glucose levels on target. Which is achievable but you need to keep on top of it from my experience on a daily basis.

I back the advice you've already been given regarding diet, exercise and (if needed) weight loss. I embraced all three from the outset and it got me down from an HbA1c of 114 at diagnosis and into normal range in 5 months, so it's been a very effective strategy and I'm still fully engaged with the diet and exercise part. If I was able to turn things around from where I was I'm sure you can do it from where you are.

Thanks all, very useful information

You are not desperately far into the diabetic zone so with some changes you should be able to pull it back.
That seems a big difference between your two tests, how far apart were they.
It is time to take action as it is a condition to be taken seriously./

That is what is concerning me more than the diagnosis
I think you need to look at it as it is what it is and move forward with making some changes to your diet. Keeping a food dairy may help you see where you could make some savings with your carb intake. If you are going to go for a low carb approach then a good starting point is no more than 130g carbs not just sugars per day,
