I thought I'd ring the surgery just in case.

The Doc rang me back - result of second blood test was 6.9 (first was 7.1).

He says I have Impaired Fasting Glycaemia.

He also told me to lose at least a stone in the next 6 months then come in for another blood test.

If I do the right things then I may never get a diabetes diagnosis, and I'm sure you'll take this in the right spirit when I say, I hope I don't have to come back here in the near future 😉

Thanks to everyone for their support and welcomes, this is a great forum, and I wish you all well.

Off with you sir and don't darken our doorstep again. 😉

Good luck to you. 🙂

Just hope I can follow you out the door next month.

Good luck with the weight loss Mark - you can do it! If we can ever help with anything, do ask - you don't have to be diagnosed with diabetes to be here, and a lot of the information given to diabetics, particularly Type 2, will be relevant to you too. You need to eat food that will not cause your blood sugar levels to increase too sharply, just as we do, so don't go it alone.

Now I officially have IFG not diabetes, I feel a bit of a fraud being here - but I take your point, I'll happily hang around for the dietary advice, and to see how folk are getting on.

Thanks

Mark

Not a fraud at all Mark! I'd recommend you get a book about Low GI food - this is food that will release glucose slowly with out causing dmaging spikes in you blood sugar levels, and in your particular case will ease the workload on your somewhat stressed pancreas. With luck, this will allow your pancreas to work well and it should also help you to lose weight healthily (don't try and lose it too quickly). Your main problem is insulin resistance - your body is unable to use the insulin it is producing efficiently. Losing weight and, if you can manage it, daily exercise will hugely improve your sensitivity to insulin. Good luck!

You have been warned Mark! The thing not to do is get complacent in a year or two and let the weight creep up again. A friend dropped from 15st to 12st a few years ago but following a change of job is now 18st! He blames his genes but he does eat twice as much as I do, and I am not a little chap (1.85m, 185kg).

Pop in the "Glucophage and Glargine" for a pint before you go!

Don't want to spoil the party but folks dxed as IFG ( as a result of an OGTT)usually progress more rapidly to Type 2 diabetes than those dxed with IGT.
The more radical endos in the USA would want you to start injecting insulin NOW in order to rest your pancreas and prevent the onset of T2 diabetes.

Those damned Yanks! It's a conspiracy to take over the world 🙄

great news Mark ...but as others have said a wake up call...try eating like a type2 anyway low Gi, no sugar, and rest in moderation and the weight will fall off...remember one day at a time build up your excercise you loose that stone in 6 months and it will stay away xx good luck and you dont have to leave the forum cos you need to keep us posted as to your progress x

Great news that Mark!

However, you need to be aware that your situation is very borderline. If the level had been only 0.1 or 0.2 mmol/l higher then the GP could quite well have been saying something else.

Whatever, you do please remember what you have learnt through your arrival on this forum. I certainly wish that I had known what you do today - and had your level of awareness at the same stage - just over nine years ago and done something about it.

Hope that we never meet up again! I hope that you will understand what I mean!

Good luck and best wishes for the future - John

Thanks everyone for your good wishes and advice.

I do realise that 0.2 higher and it would have been a positive diagnosis, and that if I don't make an effort now then Type 2 could very well be round the corner.

The scary thing is, I do eat healthily, if not by volume but by balance, and very few high GI foods (now switched to granary bread from white as I mentioned). I also walk 12-15 miles a week as I live 2 miles from work, up to 20 miles in good weather, weekends walking in the hills...

So all I can do I think is just cut down on the calories and lose 14-21 pounds.

At least when I have another blood test in 6 months time, I'll see how things are going and whether anything more is needed.

I do intend to buy a low GI book, and certainly will eat now as if I'm a type 2.

Thanks again

Mark
