Hi. I'm not officially diagnosed yet, but watch this space!!

Routine blood test last Jan showed glucose intolerance, which I managed with diet / excercise. All was going well until I was put on statins, which increased my BG on a daily basis ( luckily my doc who could see I was pro-active put test strips on prescription for me ). With other side effects of these nasty little pills occurring and getting worse I sent them back with a thanks but no thanks message.

Over the last few months my Father has had 2 strokes, a spell in hospital through malnutrition (his own doing) and various other things. He has totally cut off the rest of the family and as he says, I am his only contact with the outside world.

Over this period my BG levels have increased significantly, and over the last few days I am showing an average of 25mmol fasting. I do have a good diet generally, my biggest problem being having lunch 3 or 4 times a week in my Dads retirement village as it's a "chips with everything" menu, unless you opt for the pasta, which is just as bad for me.

Anyhow, I dont want to write "war and peace", so I'll cut it short and get reading!!

Steve.

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum 🙂 25 mmol/l is very high and it's unlikely it's those 3 or 4 lunches that are causing such high levels generally. What sort of things do you eat normally, when you have the choice? It might be worth starting a food diary and recording amounts of carbs in your food each day. Leave nothing out, and for meals you can't directly measure such as those lunches, give a generous estimate. These should help your doctor determine areas where you could improve things. With levels like those you are most certainly diabetic. A lot may also be due to the stress you must have been experiencing through your father's illnesses, so it's not just diet that may be at fault, although a healthy pancreas would nrmally be able to deal with it.

Please ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to help!

Season;s greetings to you as well!

Hi Steve. Welcome. 🙂

I echo Northerner's thoughts and would also query whether it was the statins to blame for the rise in BGs. A lot of us are on them and I, for one, have never noticed any rise in BGs due to them. It may just have been coincidence, especially since you've not come down again.

I hope they can sort you out pronto with some meds and advice, since those high levels need to come down steadily but as soon as possible.

Rob
