Scientists Just Created a "Cure" For Diabetes - Breakthrough Explained

It's a video about smart insulin: insulin that can (reversibly) deactivate when glucose levels are low.

“Smart insulin” could make HCL systems obsolete?
Probably. Or it'll mean they can be much simpler and cheaper. It'll all depend on how (and if) the insulin can be manufactured and sold. If it's cheap enough then yes: just inject enough for the day and we're done (presuming it'll last for a day; I'm not clear on how long it'll hang around in the body and maybe nobody knows, yet).

I'm guessing it'll be years away and probably expensive at least to begin with.

Kind of ironic if it comes to fruition the same time I would actually get offered an HCL? From what I’ve gleaned from the video, it does appear the be a basal. If it is a one stop shop that handles food too? Would the dosage also limit the amount of carbs consumed? (All supposition.) in theory, I like the idea of “smart insulin.” Heard about it years ago, but this is the first time I’ve seen it mentioned in concise layman’s terms. 🙂

I think even if things work out as they hope (and that doesn't often happen), we'll all be offered an HCL before this insulin is actually available to us.
Always a pleasure reading your discussion points. But I can see more positive applications for this insulin use. If the stuff works after the appropriate trial period? (Of course.) 🙂

Fascinating. Thanks for posting.
The idea of "smart insulin" is far from new. I don't know how new this one is. I just found the video nice and clear. I hope it ends up in a nice cheap generic insulin but I'm sure that's at least the usual "5 years away".

I watched a video about this modified insulin earlier today. It does sound a very interesting development although it is a long way from being available to humans with diabetes. Let's hope the funding will continue so it can become available in the future. It could be as big a game changer as the original insulin medication.

At a guess? I heard about the concept around 7 years ago. But not explained like in your video provided. & I’m not even sure this is talking about the same development?

Yes, I wonder if it's the same mechanism. Whatever, this one sounds (as the video says) very clever. If they can manufacture it at scale (and nothing else goes wrong) it'll be wonderful. (We'll all be able to turn off our low alarms at night, for example.)
