A team of scientists in collaboration with researchers at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine have created a miniature version of the human stomach using stem cells. The team used human pluripotent stem cells that can mimic any cell in the body in order to study an infection caused by the H. pylori bacteria that causes peptic ulcers and stomach cancer.

Called human gastric organoids, the 3-D mini stomachs allow the scientists to study the early stages of stomach cancer and its formation, as well as studying some of the basics of diabetes and obesity. The hope is that the research will lead to the development of new drugs and other treatments.
