This week I have been asked to buy raffle tickets for the Easter Fair, to donate a toy or craft to the class Easter basket, to send in money for my child to buy baked goods, and now am being encouraged to participate in a 'silent auction' - just had a look, there are about 50 prizes, some of which seem quite good, but one of the starting bids is £3.3k 😱

Now my impression was that the prizes are donated so shouldn't need to have that high of a starting bid?! The money goes to the school and isn't used to cover the cost. That particular prize is a boat ride followed by a meal, so quite a nice prize, but still, if it's been kindly donated, why not lower the price and give people a chance of winning it?

I work at the school so can't question it

To put it polaitly - methinks they are extracting the urine, meself. I would actually ask, were I you, whether that's a typo.

If not - what the hell is the income bracket of parents at your school?

I am tempted to ask whether it's a typo just to be petty, though I fear it's not..!
We do have a couple of well-off families but I would say they are practically being targeted. Most of us are not in a position to take part in this auction!
Blame the parent society who came up with this idea. I wonder if anyone will bid?!

There are Mediterranean cruises going cheaper than that? I’ll do a dingy & a fish & chip supper for 20 quid.
My hubby went to the Antigua Boat Show a few years back (he worked for a company based there at the time). One of the boats a.k.a. "gin palace" was available to hire for US$70k per week. If you wanted to go anywhere fuel was extra!
