Hi there, I was just diagnosed yesterday and although I kmow that this is a very common condition, I am feeling really scared. Im scared of doing the wrong things and being unable to get this condition under control. Everyone around me keeps telling me that its no big deal and I will be fine but that doesnt really help. Any advice would be greatfully received. Thanks xxx

Hello Barb and welcome to our forum.

When we are first diagnosed there is a lot to take in, so we all get scared and worried. Take each day as it comes and explore this forum. You will find loads of answers here.

Is there anything specific you'd like to know? Ask as many questions as you like, we have all asked questions at some time or another.

Relax and enjoy Christmas, there is no reason why you can't have treats from time to time, we all need them. Do you have a meter for testing with? Many people use it as a guide to the things that make them high and is handy to have if you think you are low.

Oh Barb, what a rotten Christmas present! Diabetes is a common condition, but it is serious as well, so you need to know how to deal with it in order to live a full, happy and healthy life. Have a look at the 'Useful links' for some good reading matter:

I'd definitely recommend the book Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker to get you started.

We will endeavour to answer any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly' - so ask away! 🙂

Barb, I hope your day is going well and you are having a good time.

H Barb, welcome to the Forum. I was diagnosed T2 about a month or so ago and I know how scary it is. The people on here are wonderful and friendly.

Can I just say I have got myself a copy of Gretchen Becker's book best thing I ever bought.

Here's hoping you have a good christmas xx

Hi Barb, just want to say hello and hope you are managing to enjoy Christmas despite the unwelcome news you got yesterday. Try not to worry too much, it's all very well for other people to tell you that it's not a big deal - it certainly doesn't feel like that when it's happening to you. You will be ok and we are all here to offer friendship and support, look forward to getting to know you better in the future. xx

Hi Barb

Don't worry to much you will soon get to understand it a lot better in the coming months. It is a steep learning curve but within a few months you feel a lot more in control of it all and probably a lot healthier 🙂 I know I certainly do and I was only diagnosed myself at the end of September.

This forum is great it offers great help and support and everyone is so friendly.

The book that Northerner recommended is really good and explains things really well 🙂

Hi Barb

Read and learn and listen to people who have the condition rather than those who really do KNOW all about it. There are many myths out there and I didn't know what it was all about until after I was diagnosed.

I haunted the library and took out every book about diabetes before settling on buying Diabetes for Dummies and I must be a dummy because it spoke to me. I understood it and still have it close by for reference.

Accept it and decide to do what you can do and accept all the help you can get. This forum is brilliant and like others have said, no question is too silly.

Hi and welcome to the forum🙂. I'm recently diagnosed and confused and so this festive period has been an interesting one ...:(

Hi Barb, how are things going now? I hope you are feeling happier about things and have found all the information you want here.
