Hi, I have just been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes having had symptoms of extreme fatigue, increased IBS symptoms and general aches and pains for the past 6-8 months. Having been told initially it was due to the menopause (I'm 58) I had some bloods done and my levels were 63. Am now on Metformin and am trying to adapt to a healthier lifestyle. Feel still a bit bemused to be honest as I was really just told this is your diagnosis and here are some leaflets. Got a follow up appointment in a month.
My main symptom of the general body ache/pains is still getting me down and I am not sure if this is caused by diabetes or if it something different. Just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar and had any advice.
Great to have this forum for support

Welcome to the forum
Two things which can cause aches and pains (apart from just old age) are statins which affect some people and low vitamin B12 and that can be as a result of some of the medications people take for IBS so worth asking if that has been checked.
As far as reducing your blood glucose people find that dietary changes are equally as important as taking a medication like metformin. Many find a low carb approach is successful so you may find this link helpful for some ways of modifying your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

The aches and pains could be a number of things but they might easily be menopause symptoms. We recently had a talk at work from a Harley Street dietitian and the one thing that stuck in my mind was him saying that menopausal women should aim to increase their protein intake as much as they can. This is due to dropping estrogen levels reducing muscle mass, which in turn can cause muscle fatigue (aches and pains). He also recommended resistance training very highly.

I put all my diabetes symptoms down to the menopause, which in hindsight was somewhat ridiculous as I'm fairly sure blurred vision isn't a menopause symptom but the point I'm quite haphazardly making is, it's quite easy to group symptoms together when they are in fact totally independent. If your IBS has gotten worse, drop in a sample at your GP (don't ignore that), log in here for diabetes hints and tips (this forum is fab) and maybe make an appointment at your GP to discuss the aches and pains. They might suggest blood tests.

Thanks for that. It's hard to know what causes what isn't it as lots of these symptoms relate to lots of different conditions!
I have already done a couple of stool samples and all is good so that's reassuring. The problem was my IBS has been so bad for the past few months I have only been able to eat mainly carbs as they least upset my tummy but unknown to the fact this was probably making me feel more unwell. I am going to wait a few weeks to see if my aches improve now that I am on medication and changed my diet and then speak to the doc if this is not any better.
By the way well done on getting your levels down so much. That is very impressive!

Anecdotally some people find when they reduce their carbs IBS symptoms improve.
