Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Type 2 here, with pills and insulin injections and trying to increase exercise and improve diet but it is very hard. Had diabetes for more than 10 years now (actually it might be more like 15). Motivation to join the forum here was to find out if anyone has experience of walking the Camino de Compostela -- a friend has suggested doing it in the autumn but I am not sure if it is a good idea or not.

Yes I did the Camino about 6 years ago, well part of it anyway, started in Porto.
Amazing experience and I would highly recommend and I really want to do the French route next. Not sure how COVID will impact on the pilgrims though as the majority stay in hostels and you are pretty crammed together in dormitories!
also no idea with insulin injections etc as you would need to carry everything with you all the time?
we literally took 1 change of clothes and washed them each night so travelled really light.
You meet lots of interesting characters on the way. If you go order your Camino passport before you go, then get it stamped at least twice a day.

Yes there is discussion about Frances or [the longer] Via de la Plata [starting in Seville] and with both taking the extension to Finisterre. Yes the Covid issue is ever present and it may never happen -- the plan is mid-October to November. I need to be in walking training. My friend is an old-hand at the Camino but hasn't done it for several years. Yes all the insulin in cool bags I suppose. I have been out of the country for 3 years and so regular plan needs to be re-established.

Good footwear well broken in and a roll of zinc oxide tape for when you think a blister may appear! But if your friend has been before then they will know all the tips. Oct-Nov will probably be a quieter time to go. One day we arrived at our hostel but there was no room and we ended up walking 25 miles that day! I’m really not fit enough to do that right now but would love to go again.

Don't underestimate how fit you need to be, to be successful - it is one heck of a long distance you need to cover. However - bully for you wanting to take it on - and jolly good luck!

You should totally go for it. If this covid situation has taught us anything it’s to make the most of life and what you can do!

Yes my friend has already given instructions that I should be wearing in the type of shoes I shall be wearing and when training has worn them out, wear the next pair 'in' before I set off. Todd [the friend] was apparently a real Camino junkie for a while, going and doing the whole thing or part of the routes each year. He hasn't done it in a while though he is a 'career walker' [unlike me!]. Another acquaintance has done it but apparently he didn't use the hostels but wanted/needed more creature comforts.

I am going to see another friend (so not Todd) this weekend and have been 'threatened' with some yomps across the fens! =🙂 It is the start of training really. Of course it all depends on Covid-19 and restrictions and/or lack of them.....

Yes, with Covid-19 I was in near total lock-down abroad. It was hard to take. And so yes indeed, make hay while the sun shines. And mine's a cafe con leche.... =🙂

... or indeed when in France, a cafe ole !

Good luck with your planned adventure @Dion London - sounds wonderful!

Plenty of prep before you go, and take lots of supplies and spare spares for meds and equipment, and you should have an amazing time.

Neighbours did the Camino Santiago a good few years back and said it was stunning.
